IAEA Support to Medical Physics in Nuclear Medicine
Through its programmatic efforts and its publications, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has helped define the role and responsibilities of the nuclear medicine physicist in the practice of nuclear medicine. This paper describes the initiatives that the IAEA has undertaken to support medical physics in nuclear medicine. In 1984, the IAEA provided guidance on how to ensure that the equipment used for detecting, imaging, and quantifying radioactivity is functioning properly (Technical Document [TECDOC]-137, “Quality Control of Nuclear Medicine Instruments”). An updated version of IAEA-TECDOC-137 was issued in...

Teaching mandibular implant‐Supported overdentures in dental schools in North America – a survey
ConclusionSome clear trends are apparent in the current survey: the use of two implants, no use of bar connectors and delayed loading of the implants. It is likely that graduates will not have sufficient clinical skills and will need continuing education to be familiar with the required procedures, both surgical and prosthetic.

Surgical treatment of secondary peritonitis : A continuing problem. German version.
DISCUSSION: The effective and safe use of ROD requires intensive monitoring of the patient in a setting where diagnostic tests and decision making about relaparotomy are guaranteed round the clock. The lack of knowledge on timely and adequate patient selection, together with the lack of use of easy but reliable monitoring tools seem to hamper full implementation of ROD. The accuracy of the relaparotomy decision tool is reasonable for prediction of the formation of peritonitis and necessary selection of patients for computed tomography (CT). The value of CT in the early postoperative phase is unclear. Future research and in...

Medical Necessity Indications & Impact On Management: Fourth and Subsequent Post-therapy Follow-up FDG-PET/CT Scans in Oncology Patients
Conclusions The fourth and subsequent FDG-PET/CT scans performed after completion of primary treatment lead to change in management in 6.7% when scans were performed without any medical necessity and 30.1% when performed with medical necessity. Hence, performing follow up PET/CT without medical necessity should be avoided in clinical practice for value added health care delivery.

Medical History in the Hellenic Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
Authors: Otte A, Ahn BC Abstract The Hellenic Journal of Nuclear Medicine is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary end of 2017. On board of the editorial team since 2003, this journal has influenced me like a good friend over the many past years. From time to time, the journal has published interesting and valuable historical notes. They show that nuclear medicine has a history and that medicine is its basis. They also teach us today, and some of the ancient perspectives and approaches are still valid. The reader of HJNM may be interested in these historical contributions, as they are timeless. Therefore, it was ...

Facebook as a tool to promote radiology education: expanding from a local community of medical students to all of South America
Conclusion: Creating a Facebook page and posting weekly clinical cases proved to be an effective method of promoting radiology education.

Successful implementation of Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT) in Medical Physics education: The University of Sydney ’s initial experience and recommendations
This report outlines the University of Sydney ’s initial experience with the Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT) system in the Master of Medical Physics program. VERT is a commercially available system, simulating linear accelerators, patient computed tomography (CT) sets, plans and treatment delivery. It was purpose built fo r radiation therapy (RT) education and offers learners the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills within an interactive, risk-free environment. The integration of VERT into the RT physics module of the Master of Medical Physics program was intended to enhance student knowledge and...

Striatal Dopamine Transporter Binding Correlates with Education in Dementia with Lewy Bodies (P2.181)
CONCLUSIONS: Education influences dopamine transporter protein binding in DLB. We hypothesize that education could maintain efficiency of the frontostriatal network making dopamine transporter binding a potential indirect marker of cognitive reserve in DLB. Further studies are needed to explore the relationship between education and cognitive performance in DLB and to assess if better functional networks in high-educated patients lead to lower susceptibility to pathological cognitive changes.Disclosure: Dr. Lamotte has nothing to disclose. Why Doctors Are Using Snapchat Glasses in Operating Rooms
Shafi Ahmed dons a pair of digital sunglasses and explains how the tiny lenses built into its black plastic frame, which can capture high-resolution images, are transforming how doctors get trained in operating rooms. The British colorectal surgeon used Snap Inc.’s high-tech spectacles a year ago to walk rookie physicians and millions of curious viewers through a hernia operation using the Snapchat photo-sharing app. In 2018, he plans to beam his avatar into operating rooms with so-called immersive technology, which spans everything from military training to adult entertainment, and promises to support the next gener...

A novel risk score on admission for predicting death or need for surgery in patients with acute type A intramural hematoma receiving medical therapy
AbstractThere has been continuing discussion regarding the treatment strategy for acute type A intramural hematoma (IMH). Most patients are treated conservatively in Japan; hence, predicting fatal events and stratifying risks based on results normally obtained on hospital arrival are important. We aimed to examine the incidences and risk factors of death or need for surgery for acute type A IMH in patients receiving medical treatment and to identify high-risk patients using clinical findings on hospital arrival. From 2011 to 2016, 57 consecutive patients (mean age 72.5  years; male 36.8%) diagnosed with acute type A IMH w...
