Perspectives and control of hepatitis B virus infection in Taiwan
Publication date: Available online 13 July 2015 Source:Journal of the Formosan Medical Association Author(s): Chih-Lin Lin , Jia-Horng Kao Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is endemic in Taiwan. After the implementation of universal hepatitis B vaccination, there was a significant reduction of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seropositivity and HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence in children, teenagers, and young adults. However, the incidence of HBV-related HCC in adults remains high. Through several community- and hospital-based cohort studies, the viral factors affecting the prognosis of HBV carrie...

Medical students’ awareness of and compliance with the hepatitis B vaccine in a tertiary care academic hospital: An epidemiological study
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) poses a health risk to healthcare workers who are in close proximity to infected individuals. Medical students are a particularly high-risk group due to the lack of an obligatory vaccination program and a post-vaccination screening program to determine immunity status, which results in a lack of awareness of and compliance with the HBV vaccine.

Vaccination against hepatitis b virus: are Italian medical students sufficiently protected after the public vaccination programme?
Background: The development of a vaccine against hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been a major achievement in terms of prevention of HBV infection. For the present study, we analysed the long-term immunogenicity and effectiveness of HBV vaccination among healthcare students with different working seniorities. Methods: A cross-sectional study of undergraduate and postgraduate students attending the Medical School of the Second University of Naples was conducted between September 2012 and December 2014. HBV serum markers were determined and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with the...

Acute hepatitis B virus infection with delayed appearance of hepatitis B core antibody in an immunocompromised patient: a case report
ConclusionsWhen confronted with positive hepatitis B surface antigen in the absence of hepatitis B core  antibody, consideration should be given to the possibility of both acute and persistent infection particularly in the setting of immunosuppression so that appropriate clinical management and public health interventions can take place. Given the increasing use of biologicals such as anti-tumor necr osis factor therapies either alone or with other immunosuppressive agents, this phenomenon may be encountered more frequently.

Charu Nayyar, Rushika Saksena, Vikas ManchandaIndian Journal of Medical Microbiology 2017 35(2):296-298The health-care workers (HCWs) are at an occupational risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens, mainly, HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus. HBV is currently the only blood-borne virus for which a vaccine is available. All health-care institutions must encourage the HCWs to undergo screening for blood-borne pathogens.
