The clinic as a good corporate neighbor.
Abstract Clinics today specialize in health repair services similar to car repair shops; procedures and prices are standardized, regulated, and inflexibly uniform. Clinics of the future have to become Health Care Centers in order to be more respected and more effective corporate neighbors in offering outreach services in health education and preventive health care. The traditional concept of care for health is much broader than repair management and includes the promotion of lay health competence and responsibility in healthy social and natural environments. The corporate profile and ethics of the clinic as a good...

Hypothesis driven single nucleotide polymorphism search (HyDn-SNP-S).
Abstract The advent of complete-genome genotyping across phenotype cohorts has provided a rich source of information for bioinformaticians. However the search for SNPs from this data is generally performed on a study-by-study case without any specific hypothesis of the location for SNPs that are predictive for the phenotype. We have designed a method whereby very large SNP lists (several gigabytes in size), combining several genotyping studies at once, can be sorted and traced back to their ultimate consequence in protein structure. Given a working hypothesis, researchers are able to easily search whole genome gen...

Nanotech roundup: a robotic gecko and clues to the origins of life on Earth
This month's roundup includes a futuristic robot and a surprisingly simple, needle-free way to diagnose malariaSpace robotsRobots that mimic animal movement could in future be deployed for dangerous missions such as search and rescue in disaster areas or for repair tasks in difficult environments, such as underwater or in space. A team at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada, has developed a six-legged robot called Abigaille, which has gecko-like sticky footpads and is destined to crawl on the exterior of spacecraft to carry out repair and maintenance jobs. Its performance in space-like conditions, in vacuum and at e...

Annokey: an annotation tool based on key term search of the NCBI Entrez Gene database
Conclusions: Annokey facilitates the identification of genes related to an area of interest, a task which can be onerous if performed manually on a large number of genes. Annokey provides a way to capitalize on the high quality information provided by the Entrez Gene database allowing both scalability and compatibility with automated analysis pipelines, thus offering the potential to significantly enhance research productivity.

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Long-term survival After Elective Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair 1969-2011: 5 Year Survival Remains Poor Despite Advances in Medical Care and Treatment Strategies.
CONCLUSION: Five-year survival remains poor after elective AAA repair despite advances in short-term outcomes and is associated with AAA diameter and patient age at the time of surgery. Age-adjusted survival appears to have improved; however, this cohort as a whole continues to have poor long-term survival. Research in this field should attempt to improve the life expectancy of patients with repaired AAA and to optimise patient selection. PMID: 26116489 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Assessing the impact of accessible video-based training on suturing education: a comparison to the traditional workshop method.. Chien, Nick; Trott, Terren; Adkins, Brian; Doty, Christopher
This study compares the effectiveness of video-based learning (VBL) to traditional live workshop learning (LWL) on student laceration repair performance. Methods: Forty first-year medical students with no prior experience with suturing and laceration repair were randomized into two groups: VBL and LWL. The students’ competency for laceration repair was evaluated at two assessment times (7 days and 77 days post-training) using a 22-point Suture Task Checklist. Results: For the first assessment, 36 students were evaluated. The LWL group (n=17) scored a mean of 18.4 (SD 1.8, 95%...

Identification of genes associated with melanoma metastasis
Publication date: Available online 21 November 2015 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Tao Qiu, Hongyi Wang, Yang Wang, Yu Zhang, Qiang Hui, Kai Tao The aims of the study were to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between primary melanomas and metastasis melanomas (MMs), and to investigate the mechanisms of MMs. The microarray data GSE8401 including 31 primary melanomas and 52 MMs were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus. DEGs were identified using the Linear Models for Microarray Data package. The functional and pathway enrichment analyses were performed for DEGs. Iden...

Laparoscopic repair of bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia in adults
Norman Oneil MachadoNorth American Journal of Medical Sciences 2016 8(2):65-74Bochdalek hernia (BH) is an uncommon form of diaphragmatic hernia. The rarity of this hernia and its nonspecific presentation leads to delay in the diagnosis, with the potential risk of complications. This review summarizes the relevant aspects of its presentation and management, based on the present evidence in the literature. A literature search was performed on PubMed, Google Scholar, and EMBASE for articles in English on BH in adults. All case reports and series from the period after 1955 till January 2015 were included. A total of 180 articl...

ReCAP: Oncologists Selection of Genetic and Molecular Testing in the Evolving Landscape of Stage II Colorectal Cancer FOCUS ON QUALITY
In this study, we asked: how does the family history of patients with stage II CRC influence medical oncologists’ selection of genetic and molecular testing, both related and unrelated to Lynch syndrome? SUMMARY ANSWER: We found that oncologists’ self-reported ordering of Lynch syndrome–related tests was strongly associated with the strength of CRC family history, but even so, not all oncologists would order germline testing for mismatch repair (MMR) genes, much less screen for Lynch syndrome by ordering microsatellite instability and/or immunohistochemistry for MMR proteins, in a patient scenario with t...

Large-Scale Recurrent Neural Network Based Modelling of Gene Regulatory Network Using Cuckoo Search-Flower Pollination Algorithm.
Authors: Mandal S, Khan A, Saha G, Pal RK Abstract The accurate prediction of genetic networks using computational tools is one of the greatest challenges in the postgenomic era. Recurrent Neural Network is one of the most popular but simple approaches to model the network dynamics from time-series microarray data. To date, it has been successfully applied to computationally derive small-scale artificial and real-world genetic networks with high accuracy. However, they underperformed for large-scale genetic networks. Here, a new methodology has been proposed where a hybrid Cuckoo Search-Flower Pollination Algorithm...

MINIREVIEW: The Homology Search Molecular Biophysics
Homologous recombination allows for the regulated exchange of genetic information between two different DNA molecules of identical or nearly identical sequence composition, and is a major pathway for the repair of double-stranded DNA breaks. A key facet of homologous recombination is the ability of recombination proteins to perfectly align the damaged DNA with homologous sequence located elsewhere in the genome. This reaction is referred to as the homology search and is akin to the target searches conducted by many different DNA-binding proteins. Here I briefly highlight early investigations into the homology search mechan...
