Effect of a hemodialysis patient education on fluid control and dietary.
CONCLUSION: This monocentric work shows that the establishment of an educational program has a positive impact on patients adherence to dietary measures and restriction of fluids. PMID: 33132076 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The impact of nurse‐led education on haemodialysis patients' phosphate binder medication adherence
ConclusionsA nurse‐led intervention education programme can increase patients' phosphate binder adherence. However, this does not necessarily manifest into improved serum phosphate levels.

The role of peritoneal dialysis in modern renal replacement therapy
Most patients starting dialysis can choose between peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis. There is little evidence proving that one form of dialysis is better than the other; although there may be an early advantage to peritoneal dialysis (PD) in young patients with residual function this effect is short-lived. Technique failure develops after years on PD so dialysis modality will often change during a long dialysis career. Quality of life studies, which must be interpreted carefully, indicate that patients require information about the impact of dialysis on their lifestyle as well as health-related outcomes so that they c...

Relationship between Cognitive Impairment and Depression in Dialysis Patients.
Conclusion: Cognitive impairment was closely correlated with depression. It is important to detect cognitive impairment and depression early in maintenance dialysis patients with simple bedside screening tools. PMID: 24142650 [PubMed - in process]

Single-item or two-item literacy screener to predict the S-TOFHLA among adult hemodialysis patients
Conclusion: SILS and TILS had similar test characteristics in predicting S-TOFHLA.Practice implications: While a positive result on either test increases the likelihood that a patient has low health literacy, the SILS is easier to administer and score.

Haemodialysis: hospital or home?
Healthcare costs associated with the provision of dialysis therapy are escalating globally as the number of patients developing end-stage renal disease increases. In this setting, there has been heightened interest in the application and potential benefit of home haemodialysis therapies compared with the conventional approach of thrice weekly, incentre treatments. Increasingly, national healthcare systems are financially incentivising the expansion of home haemodialysis programmes with observational studies demonstrating better patient survival, superior control of circulating volume and blood pressure, greater patient sat...

Effect of e-mail education on stress and compliance in Korean elderly on hemodialysis
Conclusion The e-mail education program for Korean elderly hemodialysis patients was effective in improving stress and compliance related to fluid restriction.

Advancing renal education: hybrid simulation, using simulated patients to enhance realism in haemodialysis education
ConclusionThrough the use of a simulated patient, hybrid simulation can improve the authenticity of renal simulation‐based education while simultaneously teaching and assessing technologically enframed caring.

Offering Patients Therapy Options in Unplanned Start: Development and Implementation of an Education Program for Unplanned-Start Patients.
Authors: Machowska A, Alscher MD, Vanga SR, Koch M, Aarup M, Rutherford P Abstract Unplanned start of dialysis is still a common and important problem for dialysis units in Europe and across the world: 30%-50% of patients can commence therapy in that way. Such patients are known to experience increased morbidity and mortality, to make greater demands on health care resources, and to be less likely to receive their dialysis modality choice. We therefore aimed to meet the specific needs of unplanned-start patients by developing and implementing an Unplanned Start Educational Programme in dialysis units. The new progr...

Early home-based group education to support informed decision-making among patients with end-stage renal disease: a multi-centre randomized controlled trial
Conclusions Early home-based group education supports informed decision-making regarding primary RRT for ESRD patients and their social networks and may remove barriers to pre-emptive transplantation.

Publication date: August 2016 Source:American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Volume 68, Issue 2 Author(s): Mala Sachdeva, Daniel W. Ross, Hitesh H. Shah Procedures are a key component to the practice of nephrology. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires nephrology fellows to acquire skills and demonstrate competency in the performance of several procedures during fellowship training, including temporary hemodialysis catheter placement, biopsy of native and transplanted kidneys, and various dialytic therapies. It is also required that fellows acquire competency in the interpretation of r...

The impact of education and cooking methods on serum phosphate levels in patients on hemodialysis: 1 ‐year study
Discussion Providing additional education to hemodialysis patients on the specific cooking methods and accordingly prepared meals may decrease serum phosphate levels without significantly affecting nutritional status which may be useful in helping to prevent and treat hyperphosphatemia.

Assessing and Treating Chronic Pain in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease
AbstractPain is one of the most common symptoms among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and is often under recognized and not adequately managed in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Barriers to adequate pain management include poor awareness of the problem, insufficient medical education, fears of possible drug-related side effects, and common misconceptions about the inevitability of pain in elderly and HD patients. Caregivers working in HD should be aware of the possible consequences of inadequate pain assessment and management. Common pain syndromes in HD patients include musculoskeletal diseases and metabolic neu...
