Use of CentriMag for refractory cardiogenic shock in a puerperal woman: case report
CONCLUSIONS: The decision to implant a MCAD should be individualized, as patient profiles do not always match the indications in the guidelines and protocols. In this study, clinical discussion of the case among the medical and multi-professional teams was essential in order to be able to successfully reverse the patient's severe clinical condition without sequelae, through using a CentriMag implant.PMID:33978133 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2020.0775.18022021

Posterior Circulation Ischaemic Stroke
Am J Med Sci. 2022 Jan 29:S0002-9629(22)00030-1. doi: 10.1016/j.amjms.2021.10.027. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPosterior circulation ischaemic stroke (PCIS) is a disease of high burden. They account for 20-25% of all ischaemic strokes. However, it is relatively under-researched and requires more clinical attention, since it carries worse functional outcomes. Vertigo, visual disturbances and sensory/motor disturbances are found in PCIS. Large artery atherosclerosis and embolism are main causes of PCIS, while there is growing evidence that vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia is a key association. Hypertension is the commonest r...

A multi-modality medical imaging head and neck phantom: Part 2. Medical imaging
Phys Med. 2022 Feb 23:S1120-1797(22)01423-5. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmp.2022.02.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe head and neck phantom discussed in an accompanying paper (part 1), is imaged with MRI, X-ray CT, PET and ultrasound. MRI scans show a distinct image contrast between the brain compartment and other anatomical regions of the head. The silicone matrix that was used to create a porous brain compartment has a relatively high proton density and a spin-spin relaxation time (T2) that is long enough to provide an MRI signal. While the longitudinal magnetization was found to recover according to a mono-exponential, a bi-e...

Flow down gradients: the problem of pressure in this physiology core concept
Adv Physiol Educ. 2023 May 4. doi: 10.1152/advan.00107.2022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe core concepts of physiology, as first published in this journal in 2011, not only provide a noteworthy teaching approach but also encourage reflection on the fundamentals of physiology. Unfortunately, a fundamental flaw has crept into the core concept of flow down gradients. Fluids do not generally flow from high to low pressure, as claimed, but only because of a specific pressure difference, that is, the perfusion pressure. This is related to a problem that is widespread in physiology, from which even the core concepts are not f...
