The effects of statins on the function and differentiation of blood cells
Arch Med Sci. 2022 Dec 25;19(5):1314-1326. doi: 10.5114/aoms/158546. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTStatins are inhibitors of β-hydroxy β-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase (HMGCR). They are used in patients with cardiovascular risk and/or suffering with cardiovascular disease. In addition to their efficient lipid-lowering effects, statins exhibit independent so called pleiotropic effects potentially affecting several immune response properties including immune cell activation, migration, cytokine generation, immune metabolism, and survival. Statins also regulate innate and acquired immunity. The focus of this review is to...

Preventive effects of 13 different drugs on colorectal cancer: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The preventive effect of allopurinol on CRC was better than that of the other 13 drugs. These results can help doctors and patients understand the preventative effects of these drugs more intuitively and provide an evidence-based basis for the clinical application of these drugs.PMID:37732038 | PMC:PMC10507769 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/167480

A cardiovascular polypill for secondary stroke prevention in a tertiary centre in Ghana (SMAART): a phase 2 randomised clinical trial
Lancet Glob Health. 2023 Oct;11(10):e1619-e1628. doi: 10.1016/S2214-109X(23)00347-9.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: A cardiovascular polypill containing generic drugs might facilitate sustained implementation of and adherence to evidence-based treatments, especially in resource-limited settings. However, the impact of a cardiovascular polypill in mitigating atherosclerotic risk among stroke survivors has not been assessed. We aimed to compare a polypill regimen with usual care on carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) regression after ischaemic stroke.METHODS: In SMAART, a phase 2 parallel, open-label, assessor-masked, randomised clini...

Sex differences in lipids: A life course approach
Atherosclerosis. 2023 Sep 1:117270. doi: 10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.117270. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDifferences between men and women in lipids and lipoproteins are observed in distribution and trajectory from infancy to adulthood in the general population. However, these differences are more pronounced in hereditary lipid disorders such as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) when absolute cholesterol levels are higher from birth onwards. In the early life course, girls compared to boys have higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and total cholesterol, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ...

How To Avoid China ’ s Medicine Monopoly
I want to share a shocking statistic with you… Around 80% of all the pharmaceuticals sold in America — both prescription and over-the-counter — are manufactured in China. I’m talking about drugs for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, blood pressure and blood thinners, diuretics, aspirin, antibiotics, and a big chunk of the world’s insulin and diabetes drugs — just to name a few.1 We don’t even make penicillin anymore. The last penicillin plant in the U.S. closed its doors in 2004. Americans who rely on medicine are now almost entirely at the mercy of a country whose relations with the U.S. have become more ...

Transient left bundle branch block associated with very high coronary artery calcium: a case report
We present a case of very high CAC in a 64-year-old woman with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia presenting with dyspnea. Initial electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstrated normal conduction with a heart rate of 76 beats/min, but new T-wave inversions in V1-V4 and a high-sensitivity troponin-I (hsTnI) value of 6 ng/L (normal < 6 ng/L). Repeat ECG in the emergency department showed normal sinus rhythm (heart rate of 80 beats/min); however, it subsequently demonstrated a left bundle branch block (LBBB) with a repeat hsTnI of 7 ng/L. Stress testing with pharmacologic single-photon emission computerized tomography...

Evaluating the prevalence of lipid assessments in children in Alberta, Canada
CMAJ Open. 2023 Sep 19;11(5):E820-E825. doi: 10.9778/cmajo.20220163. Print 2023 Sep-Oct.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia is a common, inherited, life-threatening and treatable condition that is characterized by marked elevations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), resulting in a high risk of cardiovascular disease, but treatment starting in childhood dramatically reduces this risk. We sought to evaluate the prevalence of pediatric lipid assessments among children in Alberta.METHODS: We reviewed laboratory and administrative data from Alberta Health between Apr. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2021. We ev...
