Int J Circumpolar Health. 2023 Dec;82(1):2259122. doi: 10.1080/22423982.2023.2259122. Epub 2023 Sep 20.ABSTRACTAcross Canada, the COVID-19 pandemic placed considerable stress on territorial and provincial healthcare systems. For Nunavut, the need to continue to provide access to critical care to its citizens meant that medical travel to provincial points of care (Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa) had to continue through the pandemic. This complexity created challenges related to the need to keep Nunavut residents safe while accessing care, and to manage the risk of outbreaks in Nunavut resultant from patients returning home. ...

Food Insecurity, Telomere Length and the Potential Modifying Effects of Social Support in NHANES
CONCLUSION: Food insecurity is modestly associated with shorter TL. Contrary to our hypothesis, food insecurity had more deleterious effects on TL among participants with high social support than low social support. Results may indicate that the food insecure population is a higher needs population, and increased social support reflects these needs rather than providing protective effects.PMID:37734859 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002008

Countering Mpox Vaccination Disparities in Los Angeles County, California, May-December 2022
Am J Public Health. 2023 Sep 21:e1-e5. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2023.307409. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProviding equitable access to vaccines for individuals at risk for mpox was critical for containing the 2022 mpox outbreak in Los Angeles County, California. Eligible non-Hispanic Black/African American and Latinx individuals had lower vaccine uptake than did non-Hispanic White individuals, despite having higher mpox case rates. Strategies to address disparities in vaccine uptake included using familiar messaging technology to reach individuals at risk for mpox, using partnerships with community-based organizations to raise ...

Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03764-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRacism and discrimination as social determinants of health are becoming increasingly recognised in public health research in Germany. Studies show correlations with physical and mental health and even changes at the cellular level. In addition to the adverse health effects of interpersonal and direct discrimination, the relevance of structural and institutional racism for health inequalities has been little explored. This narrative review synthesises and critically discusses relevant an...

Work Hour Mismatch on Life Evaluation: Full Heterogeneity and Individual- and Country-Level Characteristics of the Most and Least Affected Workers
This study collects survey data from 37 countries and estimates the full heterogeneity in the effects using a newly developed method—the sorted partial effect method. Based on the full heterogeneity, we employ classification analyses on the 10%-most and 10%-least affected groups and show that individuals most (vs. least) affected by overemployment are younger , while those most (vs. least) affected by underemployment are older. Age is the most influential factor that distinguishes the most and least affected workers when compared with other individual-level factors such as education level, household income, and the numbe...

Real-world cost-effectiveness of pulmonary vein isolation for atrial fibrillation: a target trial approach
Randomized controlled trials of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for treating atrial fibrillation (AF) have proven the procedure ’s efficacy. Studies assessing its empirical cost-effectiveness outside randomized trial settings are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of PVI versus medical therapy for AF.

Review of patient-centered primary care: Getting from good to great.
Families, Systems, & Health, Vol 41(3), Sep 2023, 394-395; doi:10.1037/fsh0000833Reviews the book, Patient-Centered Primary Care: Getting From Good to Great by Alexander Blount (2019). Blount convincingly explains why patient-centered care matters. Blount makes the case for integrated primary care within the milieu of the patient-centered medical home as both the logical future of health care delivery and an ethical imperative. He describes integrated care as a key factor in promoting reciprocity between optimal patient outcomes and reduced physician burnout, articulating a model of integrated care composed of four transfo...
