Glucocorticoids Improve Enteral Feeding Tolerance in Pediatric Short Bowel Syndrome With Chronic Intestinal Inflammation
Conclusions: For SBS children with histologically confirmed chronic intestinal inflammation, glucocorticoids may help promote enteral feeding tolerance. Glucocorticoids regimen should be chosen individually. Patients are more likely to respond if initial histology has significant eosinophilic infiltration. Patients may need to remain on glucocorticoids for over 6 months.

NIH scientists describe 'multi-kingdom dialogue' between internal, external microbiota
(NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) National Institutes of Health scientists and their collaborators have identified an internal communication network in mammals that may regulate tissue repair and inflammation, providing new insights on how diseases such as obesity and inflammatory skin disorders develop. The new research is published in Cell.

The Effectiveness and Safety of Intrathecal Fluorescein in the Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks
CONCLUSION: Many studies have demonstrated IF to be safe at low doses (<50mg) with a high sensitivity, specificity and positive predicative value. Our results demonstrate that the use of IF in our centre is safe and effective at identifying CSF fistulae. While we have reported some complications in our cohort, these were unlikely to be directly attributable IF use. We have described no serious complications such as seizures, limb weakness or death. We believe this study adds to the growing body of evidence that IF use in the management CSF fistula repairs is safe and effective.PMID:34074164 | DOI:10.1177/19458924211020564

Long Term Outcomes of Nasoseptal Perforation Repair With an Anterior Ethmoidal Artery Flap
CONCLUSION: The anterior ethmoidal artery flap is a reliable and minimal invasive technique for closure of symptomatic perforations. For defects larger than 2 cm, a lower success rate and additional reconstructive measures should be considered. Objective questionnaires are needed in order to evaluate functional outcomes.PMID:33878936 | DOI:10.1177/19458924211012120

Platelets and Matrix Metalloproteinases: A Bidirectional Interaction with Multiple Pathophysiologic Implications
Hamostaseologie. 2021 Apr;41(2):136-145. doi: 10.1055/a-1393-8339. Epub 2021 Apr 15.ABSTRACTPlatelets contain and release several matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a highly conserved protein family with multiple functions in organism defense and repair. Platelet-released MMPs as well as MMPs generated by other cells within the cardiovascular system modulate platelet function in health and disease. In particular, a normal hemostatic platelet response to vessel wall injury may be transformed into pathological thrombus formation by platelet-released and/or by locally generated MMPs. However, it is becoming increasingly clear ...
