Prevalence of nickel allergy in Europe following the EU Nickel Directive – a review
Summary Nickel contact allergy remains a problem in EU countries, despite the EU Nickel Directive. To study the prevalence of nickel allergy in EU countries following the implementation of the EU Nickel Directive, we performed a systematic search in PubMed for studies that examined the prevalence of nickel allergy in EU countries published during 2005–2016. We identified 46 studies: 10 in the general population and 36 in patch tested dermatitis patients. A significantly lower prevalence of nickel allergy after than before the implementation of the EU Nickel Directive was found in women aged 18–35 years (11.4% versus 19...

Are the Spanish baseline series markers sufficient to detect contact allergy to corticosteroids in Spain? A GEIDAC prospective study
ConclusionsMore than half of the patients who were allergic to the additionally tested corticosteroids were not detected with the corticosteroid allergy markers. An update of the corticosteroid allergy screening markers is encouraged, with consideration of group 3 corticosteroids.

Trends in folic acid supplementation during pregnancy - the effect on allergy development in children.
Conclusions: Our results suggest an impact of maternal folic acid supplementation prior to and during pregnancy on allergy development in children. Further observations are required to establish the role of folate in fetal epigenetic modifications. PMID: 29760612 [PubMed]

P-Phenylenediamine Hair Dye Allergy and Its Clinical Characteristics.
Conclusion: The extent of hair dye allergy involvement was related to exposure time to hair dye. For effective treatment of HDCA, it is important to properly educate patients with HDCA about the clinical manifestations of HDCA and to keep away from allergens. PMID: 29853746 [PubMed]

Trends and current spectrum of contact allergy in Central Europe: Results of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK), 2007 - 2018.
CONCLUSIONS: Decreases in sensitisation prevalence likely reflect reduced exposure, with some lag, as for hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde. If no (sufficient) decrease can be observed despite interventions, such as for nickel and chromium, affected subgroups should be identified and their causative exposures explored. Finally, increases like observed with propolis certainly warrant targeted investigation of exposures driving sensitisation, and possibly intervention. Allergy - Patients with Atopic Dermatitis Express Themselves Through a Questionnaire.
Conclusion: A total of 26.4% of survey respondents reported having doctor-diagnosed allergies. Among these patients, half reported having AD during childhood, and 1/3 reported having a current AD. CAD and AD patients clearly have a higher risk of having an allergy than patients without CAD or AD. PMID: 33447067 [PubMed]

Contact Allergy to Oxidized Linalool and Oxidized Limonene is Over-represented in Individuals with Photocontact Allergy to Ketoprofen
Acta Derm Venereol. 2021 Apr 13. doi: 10.2340/00015555-3799. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSimultaneous contact allergies are common in individuals with photocontact allergy to ketoprofen. The rate of contact allergy to the fragrance substances oxidized linalool and oxidized limonene in ketoprofen-photo-allergic individuals were investigated in comparison with the corresponding rates in individuals without photo-contact allergy to ketoprofen, using Fisher's exact test. A total of 4,021 patients were routinely tested with oxidized linalool; of whom 190 (4.7%) tested positively. For oxidized limonene the numbers were 3,797 p...

Contact Allergy to two Aluminum Salts in Consecutively Patch-Tested Dermatitis Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Patch testing with ACH and AL demonstrated similar contact allergy frequencies. To detect aluminum allergy, patch testing with ACH 10.0% pet is recommended. Aluminum chloride hexahydrate 10.0% pet should be considered for inclusion in baseline series for patch testing adults and children.PMID:34570735 | DOI:10.1097/DER.0000000000000787
