Utility of early postoperative imaging after combined endoscopic and open ventral skull base surgery.
CONCLUSION: The benefit of early postoperative imaging to detect complications after combined SBS was limited. In this cohort of patients, positive imaging findings' effects on patient management were dictated by the presence of supporting clinical symptoms. PMID: 28490405 [PubMed - in process]

Effects of changes in nasal volume on voice in patients after endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery.
CONCLUSION: Although changes in nasal volume, voice, and speech may develop after EETSA, we found that changes in nasal volume were not correlated with changes in any voice-quality measure. However, the postnasal cavity was the region most dramatically affected by EETSA, and postnasal volume changes after surgery may be associated with hypernasal speech. Gender-specific differences in serum immunoglobulin E levels and prevalence of fungus in sinonasal tissue noted in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery.
CONCLUSION: Women who underwent ESS for CRS had higher SNOT-22 symptom burden. Worsened symptomatology may be secondary to a higher prevalence of primary headache disorders in women. However, surgeons should also be aware that female patients with CRS who seek ESS may have a higher prevalence of severe disease endotypes (more tissue fungal elements, elevated serum IgE levels) and phenotypes. Headaches and facial pain in rhinology.
Abstract "Sinus headache" is a common chief complaint that often leads patients to an otolaryngologist's office. Because facial pain may or may not be sinogenic in origin, the otolaryngologist should be equipped to evaluate and treat or to appropriately refer these patients. Analysis of current data indicates that the majority of patients who present with sinus headaches actually have migraines. Furthermore, the downstream effect of the cytokine cascade initiated in migraine physiology can cause rhinologic symptoms, including rhinorrhea, congestion, and lacrimation, which may also confound diagnosis. Other causes ...

Electronic Consultation Support System for Radiocontrast Media Hypersensitivity Changes Clinicians' Behavior.
CONCLUSIONS: The consultation support system for those with previous RCM hypersensitivity reactions changed physicians' practice patterns and decreased recurrent RCM hypersensitivity reactions as well. PMID: 29411557 [PubMed]

Bronchiectasis in severe asthma: clinical features and outcomes.
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that in subjects with severe asthma, the presence of bronchiectasis is associated with more frequent hospitalizations, concomitant GERD, hypersensitivity to NSAIDs and higher blood eosinophilia. Bronchiectasis could represent an additional phenotypic feature of severe eosinophilic asthma. PMID: 29496464 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Good's Syndrome-Association of the Late Onset Combined Immunodeficiency with Thymoma: Review of Literature and Case Report.
Abstract Good's syndrome, the adult onset hypogammaglobulinemia associated with thymoma has been explained about six decades ago. It generally presents with recurrent infections and several paraneoplastic syndromes including myasthenia gravis, pure red cell aplasia, connective tissue disorders, superior vena cava, Horner's syndrome, lichen planus and inflammatory bowel disease. Lack of B cell, dysfunction of T cell, CD4+ T cell lymphopenia, reversed CD4/CD8+ T cell ratio, autoantibodies against Th17 related cytokines have been respected as the pathogenesis of the immune dysregulation this syndrome. A 57-year-old m...

Eccentric, mature osseous cap: A distinct imaging feature of sinonasal osteoblastoma.
CONCLUSION: Sinonasal osteoblastoma is an extremely rare entity with undefined imaging characteristics to guide preoperative decision-making. Here we reported, to our knowledge, the first description of a characteristic imaging sign of an eccentric, mature osseous cap, which corresponded histologically to a single peripheral layer rim of osteoblasts, a unique trait of osteoblastoma. Association Between Airway Parameters and Abdominal Fat Measured via Computed Tomography in Asthmatic Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Abdominal fat is associated with asthma, according to the location of fat accumulation. In asthmatic subjects, visceral fat seems to be attributable to the bronchial luminal narrowing, while subcutaneous fat may be related to thickening of bronchial wall. PMID: 30088370 [PubMed]

Differences in airway structural changes assessed by three-dimensional computed tomography in asthma and asthma-COPD overlap.
CONCLUSION: Patients with ACO have a thicker airway wall than those with asthma, suggesting that airway remodeling is more prominent in ACO than in asthma. PMID: 30138669 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Teaching Residents Frontal Sinus Anatomy Using a Novel 3-Dimensional Conceptualization Planning Software-Based Module.
Conclusion There is minimal literature on proven methods for teaching frontal sinus anatomy. Objectively, participants of the modified FSMC simulation training using new software improved their ability to recognize cells of the frontal recess on CT scans. They especially exhibited better localization of the frontal sinus drainage pathway. Subjectively, participants reported benefit from the course and felt they would be better surgeons.
