Evidence of microbiota dysbiosis in chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionBacterial community dysbiosis was more apparent than specific associations with examined phenotypes or endotypes, and may play a role in the pathogenesis or influence the severity of CRS. Reductions in several common core bacterial taxa, increased inter‐ and intrasubject variability, reduced bacterial diversity, and increased bacterial load characterized aberrant bacterial communities in CRS.

Sinus surgery can improve quality of life, lung infections, and lung function in patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia
ConclusionWe demonstrated an improvement in CRS‐related symptoms after ESS and adjuvant therapy. In selected PCD patients, the suggested regimen may postpone chronic lung infection with P. aeruginosa and stabilize lung function.

Fabrication and validation of a low ‐cost, medium‐fidelity silicone injection molded endoscopic sinus surgery simulation model
ConclusionsSimulation models have proven efficacy in endoscopic skill and procedural training. The group developed a novel low‐cost, medium‐fidelity sinus training model utilizing three‐dimensional modeling and printing. Testing of this model revealed high ratings for both face and construct validity for a range of endoscopic procedures. Strong interest in using this model for resident training was unanimous among all survey participants. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2016

Preoperative β‐blockade and hypertension in the first hour of functional endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionsPreoperative β‐blocker use is an independent predictor of an exaggerated hypertensive response within the first hour of operative time. An exaggerated hypertensive effect should be anticipated in patients presenting for FESS with established pharmacologic β‐blockade, and caution should be applied to use of epinephrine‐containing solutions. Economics of Chronic Rhinosinusitis
The objective of this article is to provide an updated review of the economic burden of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and discuss how both medical and surgical interventions impact direct and indirect costs related to CRS. By understanding the economics of CRS, clinicians may improve the patient-centeredness of their care and help distinguish between low and high value interventions.Recent FindingsDirect costs related to CRS are primarily driven by outpatient physician visits, prescription medical therapy, and endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). CRS produces large indirect costs and these costs often vary based on the severity ...

Periodic olfactory assessment in patients undergoing skull base surgery with preservation of the olfactory strip
ConclusionsExpanded endoscopic approaches to skull base tumors involving reconstruction with an NSF are associated with a short‐term negative impact on olfaction. Olfaction does not seem to be affected by the surgical resection of pituitary adenomas associated with rescue flaps. Identification of the olfactory epithelium and meticulous harvesting of the NSF are critical to preserve olfaction. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Middle meatal packing in endoscopic sinus surgery —to pack or not to pack?—a decision‐analysis model
ConclusionOur decision‐analysis model indicates that middle meatal packing is not advantageous for patients undergoing ESS. Absorbable packing materials have a less adverse effect on quality of life than nonabsorbable materials. Level of Evidence1a. Laryngoscope, 2016

Use of balloon sinuplasty in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis in the United States
ConclusionFrom 2011 to 2014 there was an increase in the use of balloon sinuplasty and a modest decrease in the use of conventional FESS in the United States. Patients with frontal or sphenoid sinus surgical sites were more likely to have a balloon or hybrid procedure.

Safety and efficacy of a bioabsorbable fluticasone propionate –eluting sinus dressing in postoperative management of endoscopic sinus surgery: a randomized clinical trial
ConclusionSinuBand FP was well tolerated and showed evidence of efficacy. A larger study is needed to further evaluate and confirm the benefits of SinuBand FP.

Development and validation of a 3D ‐printed model of the ostiomeatal complex and frontal sinus for endoscopic sinus surgery training
ConclusionWe describe the development and validation of a novel 3D‐printed model for the training of endoscopic sinus surgery skills. Although participants found the simulator to be a useful training and educational tool, further model development could improve the outcome.

Role of tissue eosinophils in chronic rhinosinusitis –associated olfactory loss
ConclusionTissue eosinophilia is associated with olfactory loss in CRSwNP, independent of disease severity. These results suggest a possible role for eosinophils or eosinophil‐associated cytokines in CRS‐associated olfactory loss.

Comparison of the effect of aerosolized fibrin sealant and biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam on hemostasis and wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery: a prospective randomized study
ConclusionFS and Nasopore were equally successful in achieving hemostasis and patient satisfaction after FESS. However, our results suggest that differential mucosal healing patterns may be induced by alternative absorbable hemostatic materials. FS‐treated sides showed more optimal healing patterns than Nasopore‐packed sides.

Relationships between upper airway diseases and lower airway obstruction in the adult Korean general adult population
Conclusions: Smoking may be a confounder of the relationships between nasal polyps and lower airway obstruction in a general population samples. However, considering the heterogeneity of nasal polyps, phenotype investigation is warranted.
