5 Nutrition Facts misconceptions that sabotage patient health
The fight against diabetes and heart disease also means fighting nutritional misunderstandings and offering sound advice to patients. A new video helps dispel common misconceptions about the Nutrition Facts label found on food packages and offers physicians guidance on how to educate their patients. Designed to help patients better understand what they are consuming and make more informed decisions about their daily diet, the Nutrition Facts label can be a powerful tool when used correctly. The Digital Education to Limit Salt in the Home Program Improved Salt-Related Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors in Parents
Conclusions: The improvement in salt-related KABs in the DELISH program indicates the potential for online technology, to disseminate simple salt reduction education messages to families with primary school–aged children. Future work should seek to improve the quality of data collected by including a larger sample size and a control group to integrate the program within the school setting to enable wider dissemination.

High Prevalence of Renal Salt Wasting Without Cerebral Disease as Cause of Hyponatremia in General Medical Wards.
CONCLUSIONS: Of the 24 patients with RSW, 21 had no cerebral disease, supporting our proposal to change cerebral-renal salt wasting to renal salt wasting. Application of established pathophysiological standards and a new algorithm based on determination of FEurate were superior to the volume approach for determination of urinary sodium when identifying the cause of hyponatremia. Primary prevention of ischaemic heart disease: populations, individuals, and health professionals
Publication date: 24–30 August 2019Source: The Lancet, Volume 394, Issue 10199Author(s): Rajeev Gupta, David A WoodSummaryIschaemic heart disease has a multifactorial aetiology and can be prevented from developing in populations primordially, and in individuals at high risk by primary prevention. The primordial approach focuses on social determinants of health in populations: political, economic, and social factors, principally unplanned urbanisation, illiteracy, poverty, and working and living conditions. Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals can lead to major improvements in cardiovascular health, and ...

Spraying Cotton in Bolivar County, Mississippi, the Summer Following My First Year of Medical School
The John Deere wheels cut hard coming to the turn row that runs along the county line near the evergreen copse in Paradise ’s south forty acres. In the wake of the tire tread, a dull patch flashes within the white blur beneath me. Exposed bone blooms among lobed leaves of cotton. Five vertebrae lie bleached and unstrung. I idle the machine, lurching to rest as diesel fumes rise in a dirge to these remains at the field ’s edge. I stand to see better. They are lumbar (without facets for ribs) but unknown. All bones being the same beneath skin. I have seen others, too: a woman's, this past fall. The instructors started us...

Are Salt Tablets Effective in the Treatment of Euvolemic Hyponatremia?
CONCLUSIONS: The use of salt tablets in the treatment of euvolemic hyponatremia is associated with a small but significant improvement in serum sodium compared with patients who did not receive such therapy, even after adjusting for age, sex, weight, and initial serum sodium. This study supports the effectiveness of salt tablets in the treatment of euvolemic hyponatremia in medical patients. PMID: 32123927 [PubMed - in process]

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring for the management of hypertension
Chin Med J (Engl). 2022 Feb 23. doi: 10.1097/CM9.0000000000002028. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAmbulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) has become indispensable in the current management of hypertension. ABPM is particularly useful in the accurate diagnosis of hypertension. Its diagnostic thresholds had been recently established based on hard clinical outcomes. Cross-classification of patients according to office and ambulatory blood pressure identifies white-coat, masked, and sustained hypertension. ABPM is also useful in cardiovascular (CV) risk assessment. It provides information on daytime and nighttime blood pres...
