Telehealth as an Effective Care Delivery Method During the COVID-19 Pandemic for the Rhode Island Behavioral Health Population
This study investigated (1) if telehealth allowed for patients who seek mental health services to maintain visit frequency and (2) if subpopulations were less likely to utilize telehealth. We used descriptive statistics to analyze the change in total number of visits, in-person visits from pre-waiver to post-waiver, and a multivariate linear regression to identify relationships between demographics and telehealth utilization. Participants were able to maintain the frequency of visits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Race/ethnicity, age, gender, employment status, and housing status were all statistically significant predictor...

Gender Differences in Psychosocial Stress During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Population-based Study in South Korea
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted differential impacts on psychosocial stress among working-age individuals in South Korea, with women, particularly those in urban areas, experiencing a heightened risk. The findings highlight the importance of addressing gender-specific needs and implementing appropriate interventions to mitigate the psychosocial consequences of the pandemic.PMID:37735833 | DOI:10.3961/jpmph.23.170

Heterogeneous Influence of Socioeconomic Inequality on Population Health: A Cross-national Study
This study proposes using a quantile regression model to examine the heterogeneous influence of socioeconomic inequality (educational inequality, income inequality, and unemployment rate) on population health (life expectancy and healthy life expectancy) based on macro panel data from 160 countries. It was found that in both rich and poor countries, elevated income inequality and unemployment rate significantly predicted reduced life expectancy and healthy life expectancy, while the influences of educational inequality on the two health outcomes were not significant. Furthermore, the negative influence of socioeconomic ine...

Racism and discrimination in the context of health inequalities-a  narrative review
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03764-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRacism and discrimination as social determinants of health are becoming increasingly recognised in public health research in Germany. Studies show correlations with physical and mental health and even changes at the cellular level. In addition to the adverse health effects of interpersonal and direct discrimination, the relevance of structural and institutional racism for health inequalities has been little explored. This narrative review synthesises and critically discusses relevant an...

Geographic Disparity in Distance to Trauma Care in Secondary Schools across the United States
CONCLUSION: This study highlights geographic disparity in distance to trauma care for SSs in the United States. SSs located > 60 miles from trauma centers were at reduced odds of access to AT services. Identification of geographic trends of AT services relative to the location of tertiary trauma centers is a critical first step to prevent fatal consequences of catastrophic injuries.PMID:37734731 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0149.23

Flexible retirement options for NHS staff – information for branches
This article explores the options available to NHS Pension Scheme members. UNISON branches should ask their employer/s to discuss flexible working policies and seek to negotiate fair and equitable processes for applications. Members who retire must notify UNISON to update their membership to ensure they remain members. What is changing? From 1 April 2022, all active pension scheme members in the NHS are in the 2015 Section of the NHS Pension Scheme. Many NHS staff will have accrued pension benefits in either or both of the two legacy sections(1995 section and 2008 section ). New flexibilities coming in from 1 October 2023 ...

Fabrication of versatile polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogels for information hiding and flexible sensors: Heat-induced adjustable stiffness and transparency
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 18:126950. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the growing demand for wearable electronics, designing biocompatible hydrogels that combine self-repairability, wide operating temperature and precise sensing ability offers a promising scheme. Herein, by interpenetrating naturally derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel matrix, a novel hydrogel is successfully developed via simple coordination with calcium chloride (CaCl2). The chelation of CMC and Ca2+ is applied as a second crosslinking mechanism to stabilize the hydrogel at r...

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe evaluated the outcomes of the Krukenberg procedure conducted for the loss of a hand secondary to an electrical burn injury in six patients (10 hands). Patient demographics, indications for surgery, surgical strategy, complications, clinical measurements and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score were recorded, in addition to subjective outcome measures, including self-perception of social acceptance and employment status. The median DASH score at follow-up was 22 (range 4-50, interquartile r...

Differences in Child Language Assessment Practices Between School-Based and Non-School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists: Results From a Nationwide Survey
CONCLUSIONS: SLPs practicing in school-based settings seem to handle more employment-based factors that impact independent diagnostic decision making than SLPs working in different employment settings when assessing children for potential language disorders. Clinical recommendations are provided, and implications for implementation-based assessment research in child language are discussed.PMID:37725559 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-22-00185
