Advice to Rest for More Than 2 Days After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Is Associated With Delayed Return to Productivity: A Case-Control Study
Conclusions: mTBI patients continue to be told to rest for longer than expert recommendations and practice guidelines. This study supports growing evidence that prolonged rest after mTBI is generally unhelpful, as patients in the exposure group were less likely to have resumed work/school at 1–2 months post-injury. We could not identify patient characteristics associated with getting prolonged rest advice. Further exploration of who gets told to rest and who delivers the advice could inform strategic de-implementation of this clinical practice. Introduction In the early twenty-first century, complete rest unt...

Upskilling health and care workers with augmented and virtual reality: protocol for a realist review to develop an evidence-informed programme theory
Introduction Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are increasingly used to upskill health and care providers, including in surgical, nursing and acute care settings. Many studies have used AR/VR to deliver training, providing mixed evidence on their effectiveness and limited evidence regarding contextual factors that influence effectiveness and implementation. This review will develop, test and refine an evidence-informed programme theory on what facilitates or constrains the implementation of AR or VR programmes in health and care settings and understand how, for whom and to what extent they ‘work’....

Higher education delegates tackle equality and discrimination
A number of motions in this week’s higher education (HE) national conference addressed discrimination in the sector, against both Black and trans individuals. Among them, Black Lives Matter – a higher education trade union programme of action, noted how the movement that grew out of international outrage following the murder of George Floyd in the US was continuing to challenge racism within modern society, in all its forms. Introducing the motion, Nicole Garnier of the HE service group executive, told delegates: “In many universities there is a disturbing but depressingly familiar pattern of disproportionate numbers...

Abstract A59: Providing care for LGBTQ individuals with cancer: A call for education and training
Conclusions: Survey results indicate that oncology providers in specialties where LGBTQ patients may be disproportionately affected are accepting of LGBTQ individuals and acknowledge the existence of unique needs for this population, yet are largely unaware of specific health behaviors and risk factors of, and best practices regarding, this population. This study also highlights the potential need for improved LGBTQ-related content in health professional school curricula, as well as for continuing education and training for providers that addresses the care of LGBTQ patient populations.Citation Format: Christina Tamargo, J...
