Anaphylaxis in food allergy.
Authors: Pesek RD, Jones SM Abstract Food allergy is a known trigger of anaphylaxis. Although the awareness of food allergies has improved, food-related allergic reactions and anaphylaxis still commonly occur. The recognition of anaphylaxis, its prompt treatment, and patient education are important for the prevention of future food reactions. Patients and health care providers should also recognize the importance of epinephrine as the primary treatment of anaphylaxis. When food-related anaphylaxis occurs, patients should receive education regarding their food allergies, an epinephrine auto-injector, and follow-up w...

One-year survey of paediatric anaphylaxis in an allergy department.
CONCLUSIONS: In our paediatric population, the main triggering agent of anaphylaxis was IgE-mediated food allergy. Epinephrine is underused, as reported by others. Often, children have several episodes before being assessed by an allergist. We stress the importance of systematic notification and improvement of educational programmes in order to achieve a better preventive and therapeutic management of this life-threatening entity. Food allergy: practical approach on education and accidental exposure prevention.
Authors: Pádua I, Moreira A, Moreira P, Barros R Abstract Food allergies are a growing problem and currently the primary treatment of food allergy is avoidance of culprit foods. However, given the lack of information and education and also the ubiquitous nature of allergens, accidental exposures to food allergens are not uncommon. The fear of potential fatal reactions and the need of a proper avoidance leads in most of the cases to the limitation of leisure and social activities. This review aims to be a practical approach on education and accidental exposure prevention regarding activities like shopping, eating o...

The impact and treatment of allergic rhinitis in the Middle East: A comparison with the landmark allergy surveys from other worldwide regions.
CONCLUSION: There remains an unmet need in the treatment of nasal allergies worldwide. The allergy surveys highlight the key factors in choosing an INCS: fast, complete, and long-lasting symptom relief. There is opportunity for novel INCS treatments that address these needs while reducing troublesome side effects. Patient education must play a central role in treatment decision making, particularly in the Middle East, to achieve higher patient satisfaction. PMID: 24070203 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characteristics of Anaphylaxis in 907 Chinese Patients Referred to a Tertiary Allergy Center: A Retrospective Study of 1,952 Episodes.
CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed that anaphylaxis appeared to occur more often in adults than in infants and children, which were in contrast to those found in other countries. In particular, wheat allergens played a prominent role in triggering food-induced anaphylaxis, followed by fruits/vegetables. Traditional Chinese medicine was a cause of drug-induced anaphylaxis. Furthermore, exercise was the most common factor aggravating anaphylaxis. Education regarding the more aggressive use of epinephrine in the emergency setting is clearly needed. Educational programmes in food allergy.
Authors: Kugler C, Brockow K, Ring J Abstract About 17% of German children and adolescents suffer from at least one of the following atopic illnesses: allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic eczema or asthma. Consistent professional therapy is necessary to limit the health-related risks and improve these medical conditions. The consequences of a diagnosis often mean an additional task for the parents of diseased children, where they have to act simultaneously as an educator and therapist for their children. Structured educational programmes were developed for a few diseases such as asthma and atopic eczema in order to...

Allergen immunotherapy: clinical and practical education of Italian trainees in allergy and clinical immunology schools.
Authors: Ridolo E, Incorvaia C, Senna GE, Montagni M, Olivieri E, Canonica GW Abstract We performed a survey, based on a questionnaire including 20 items, submitted anonymously to Italian trainees in Allergology and Clinical Immunology, in order to obtain information about their specific allergen immunotherapy (AIT) practices. The questionnaire was sent to 40 trainees, who had attended the last two years of the training course. Thirty-four subjects (mean age: 27 years, 65% females) adequately completed the survey. The answers to the questionnaire showed that only 60% of the training programs included lectures on AI...
