A Combination of Olanzapine and Samidorphan in Adults with Schizophrenia and Bipolar I Disorder: Overview of Clinical Data
CONCLUSION: Data across 18 OLZ/SAM studies in >1600 subjects support an antipsychotic efficacy and safety profile for OLZ/SAM that is similar to olanzapine, with significantly less weight gain than olanzapine. OLZ/SAM is a potential new treatment for schizophrenia and BD-I patients needing efficacious long-term treatment with reduced risk of weight gain.FUNDING: Alkermes, Inc.PMID:34127121 | DOI:10.1017/S1092852920002771

Combined treatment of myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol (80:1) as a therapeutic approach to restore inositol eumetabolism in patients with bipolar disorder taking lithium and valproic acid
CONCLUSIONS: Considering the iatrogenic depletion of inositols, the tailored ratio 80:1 in favour of myo-ins, may become a safe and effective strategy to counteract side effects, by providing a large amount of myo-ins and an adequate one of d-chiro-ins. The clinical dosage of inositols used as dietary supplementation is 4 grams/daily, and it may allow the recovery of the side effects and improve patients' QoL, without reducing the central therapeutic effect of the pharmacological therapy.PMID:34533796 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202109_26657

Refinement of the Barnes and Morris water maze protocols improves characterization of spatial cognitive deficits in the lithium-pilocarpine rat model of epilepsy
This study optimized the procedure of the Morris water maze and the Barnes maze to evaluate spatial learning and memory in rats with the lithium-pilocarpine TLE model (LPM rats). It was demonstrated that LPM rats required a mandatory and prolonged habituation stage for both tests. Therefore, the experimental rats performed relatively well on these tests. Nevertheless, LPM rats exhibited a slower learning process compared to the control rats. LPM rats also showed a reduction in spatial memory formation. This was more pronounced in the Barnes maze. Also, LPM rats utilized a sequential strategy for searching in the Barnes maz...

A systematic review of the evidence on the treatment of rapid cycling bipolar disorder
Conclusion:  The literature examining the pharmacological treatment of rapid cycling is still sparse and therefore there is no clear consensus with respect to its optimal pharmacological management. Clinical trials specifically studying rapid cycling are needed in order to unravel the appropriate management of rapid cycling bipolar disorder.

A review of FDA-approved treatment options in bipolar depression.
CONCLUSION: Relatively few agents are FDA-approved for bipolar depression. The selection and sequencing of agents in bipolar depression should give primacy to those agents that are FDA-approved. Further refinement of the selection process will need to pay careful attention to the relative hazards of weight gain and metabolic disruption in this highly susceptible population. Other agents with differential mechanisms (eg, ketamine) offer a promising alternative in bipolar depression. PMID: 24237641 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Formic Acid and Acetic Acid Induce a Programmed Cell Death in Pathogenic Candida Species.
In conclusion, our results show that a low concentration of formic acid induces apoptosis-like programmed cell death in the Candida yeast and has a minimal effect on the survivability of mammalian cells, suggesting potential applications in the treatment of these infections. The Psychopharmacology Algorithm Project at the Harvard South Shore Program: An Algorithm for Acute Mania
Abstract: This new algorithm for the pharmacotherapy of acute mania was developed by the Psychopharmacology Algorithm Project at the Harvard South Shore Program. The authors conducted a literature search in PubMed and reviewed key studies, other algorithms and guidelines, and their references. Treatments were prioritized considering three main considerations: (1) effectiveness in treating the current episode, (2) preventing potential relapses to depression, and (3) minimizing side effects over the short and long term. The algorithm presupposes that clinicians have made an accurate diagnosis, decided how to manage contribut...

A Systematic Review of Experience of 180W XPS GreenLight Laser Vaporization of the Prostate in 1640 men
ConclusionThe 180W XPS GreenLight laser offers shorter operation times than the former devices. In the one randomised controlled trial comparison with TURP, volume reduction and functional results were comparable to those of TURP. Longer term studies are required.

Children’s Health in Latin America: The Influence of Environmental Exposures
Conclusions: To control environmental threats to children’s health in Latin America, WHO, including PAHO, will focus on the most highly prevalent and serious hazards—indoor and outdoor air pollution, water pollution, and toxic chemicals. Strategies for controlling these hazards include developing tracking data on regional trends in children’s environmental health (CEH), building a network of Collaborating Centres, promoting biomedical research in CEH, building regional capacity, supporting development of evidence-based prevention policies, studying the economic costs of chronic diseases in children, and developing pl...

Obesity and Overweight are Highly Prevalent in Pediatric Secondary Pseudotumor Cerebri Syndrome (I12-1B)
CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients diagnosed with secondary PTCS were on average significantly overweight compared to their peers. Hence excess body weight may contribute to PTCS even when a potential secondary cause is identified. Study Supported by:5-K12-DK-94723-2(SEM)Disclosure: Dr. Paley has nothing to disclose.
