Unique Changes in the Incidence of Acute Chest Syndrome in Children with Sickle-Cell Disease Unravel the Role of Respiratory Pathogens: A Time-Series Analysis
Chest. 2023 Aug 4:S0012-3692(23)05256-X. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.07.4219. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is a life-threatening complication of sickle-cell disease (SCD). Although respiratory pathogens are frequently detected in children with ACS, their respective role in triggering the disease is still unclear. We hypothesized that ACS incidence followed the unprecedented population-level changes in respiratory pathogens dynamics following the COVID-19-related non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs).RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the respective role of respiratory pathogens in ACS epidem...

Infectious risk when prescribing rituximab in patients with hypogammaglobulinemia acquired in the setting of autoimmune diseases
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Jun 3;120:110342. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110342. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe conducted a single-centre retrospective cohort study in a French University Hospital between 2010 and 2018 to describe the risk of severe infectious event (SIE) within 2 years after the date of first rituximab infusion (T0) prescribed after the evidence of acquired hypogammaglobulinemia (gamma globulins [GG] ≤ 6 g/L) in the setting of autoimmune diseases (AID) other than rheumatoid arthritis. SIE occurred in 26 out of 121 included patients. Two years cumulative incidence rates were 12.7 % (95 % CI 5.1-23.9) in ...

Pneumococcal vaccination coverage at the initiation of chronic dialysis, and its association with mortality during the first year
CONCLUSIONS: Pneumococcal immunization with PCV13 followed by PPSV23, or with PCV13 alone, but not with PPSV23 alone, is independently associated with decreased one year-mortality in patients who start dialysis.PMID:37179164 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.05.003

Effect of medical staff training on vaccination coverage in outpatients with cancer: An interventional multicenter before-and-after study
CONCLUSION: As expected, VC was very low in patients with cancer, consistent with the literature. There was no impact of the intervention for pneumococcal and influenza VC.PMID:36654840 | PMC:PMC9841025 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvacx.2023.100261

Focus group study on perceptions and information needs regarding vaccines targeting the older population: a cross-country comparison in four European countries
The objective of the study is to perform a cross-country analysis of the perceptions and decision-making behaviour of older adults regarding vaccinations and their information needs. Focus groups with older adults were conducted in four countries: France, Hungary, Italy and the Netherlands. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Demographic characteristics of participants were gathered with a questionnaire. Influenza and tetanus vaccines were commonly known, as was the disease influenza. On the contrary, the awareness of the vaccines against pneumococcal disease and herpes zoster were low. Participants also expressed ...

Quality of antibody responses by adults and young children to 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccination and Streptococcus pneumoniae colonisation
Vaccine. 2022 Oct 6:S0264-410X(22)01190-2. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.09.069. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChildhood pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) protects against invasive pneumococcal disease caused by vaccine-serotype (VT) Streptococcus pneumoniae by generating opsonophagocytic anti-capsular antibodies, but how vaccination protects against and reduces VT carriage is less well understood. Using serological samples from PCV-vaccinated Malawian individuals and a UK human challenge model, we explored whether antibody quality (IgG subclass, opsonophagocytic killing, and avidity) is associated with protection from ca...

Hospitalizations for infections in primary Sj ögren's syndrome patients: a nationwide incidence study
CONCLUSIONS: pSS patients are at higher risk of hospitalization for infections. The increased risk of hospitalization for mycobacterial infections illustrates the potential bilateral relationship between the two conditions. Vaccination against respiratory pathogens and herpes zoster virus may help prevent some hospitalizations in pSS patients.KEY MESSAGESPrimary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) increases hospitalization risk for community infections: bronchopulmonary, skin, dental, ear-nose-throat, intestinal infections and pyelonephritis.Hospitalizations for zoster and mycobacterial infections are also increased in this populati...

Pneumococcal and influenza vaccination coverage among at-risk adults: A 5-year French national observational study
CONCLUSION: Pneumococcal and influenza vaccination coverage of adults at risk of pneumococcal disease fell well below public health expectations. Invitations for pneumococcal vaccination should be sent by the NHI to high-risk patients. Patient management protocols should include pneumococcal vaccination. Patients with multiple comorbidities are a high-priority population given the large potential health gains offered by pneumococcal vaccination. Commitment of both scientific societies and health authorities is urgently needed to increase vaccination coverage in at-risk populations.PMID:35811205 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.06.071

Impact of Hospitalization in an Endocrinology Department on Vaccination Coverage in People Living with Diabetes: A Real-Life Study
Conclusions: Our real-life study highlights that hospitalization and multidisciplinary management (i.e., physician-pharmacist) may be key points in the diabetes care pathway to improve vaccination coverage, especially for patients with advanced diabetes and comorbidities.PMID:35208544 | DOI:10.3390/medicina58020219

Vaccination coverage in hematological patients undergoing chemotherapy: Should we move towards personalized vaccination?
CONCLUSION: Despite vaccination opportunities, the complexity of these specific recommendations and the lack of communication between the health actors could explain the suboptimal vaccination coverage in this high-risk population. A proactive attitude of all actors in the city and hospital, including better patient information and a personalized and evolving vaccination schedule to help GPs to coordinate vaccination would allow to improve vaccine coverage.PMID:34740475 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.10.040
