CircOGDH Is a Penumbra Biomarker and Therapeutic Target in Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that CircOGDH is a potential therapeutic target for regulating ischemia neuronal viability, and is enriched in neuron-derived exosomes in the peripheral blood, exhibiting a predictive biomarker of penumbra in patients with AIS.PMID:35189704 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.121.319412

The Impact of Sex and Gender on Stroke
Circ Res. 2022 Feb 18;130(4):512-528. doi: 10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.121.319915. Epub 2022 Feb 17.ABSTRACTWomen face a disproportionate burden of stroke mortality and disability. Biologic sex and sociocultural gender both contribute to differences in stroke risk factors, assessment, treatment, and outcomes. There are substantial differences in the strength of association of stroke risk factors, as well as female-specific risk factors. Moreover, there are differences in presentation, response to treatment, and stroke outcomes in women. This review outlines current knowledge of impact of sex and gender on stroke, as well as delinea...

Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults Caused by Cervical Artery Dissection —A Retrospective Study
Conclusions Dissection of cervical or intracranial artery is an important cause of ischemic stroke, especially in young adults. Therefore, it should be considered in young adults with presentation of stroke who lack traditional and modifiable risk factors. Cryptogenic Stroke and Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source: Risk Factors and Approaches for Detection of Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSION: After AF detection, consideration should be given to prescribing anticoagulants, instead of antiplatelet agents, for the secondary prevention of stroke.PMID:34939547 | DOI:10.2174/1573403X18666211221145714

Cerebrovascular Disease and Statins
Front Cardiovasc Med. 2021 Dec 2;8:778740. doi: 10.3389/fcvm.2021.778740. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTElevated low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) is a causal factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD); accordingly, LDL-C lowering is associated with a decreased risk of progression of atherosclerotic plaques and development of complications. Currently, statins play a central role in any ASCVD management and prevention strategies, in relation to their lipid-lowering action and potentially to pleiotropic effects. After coronary artery disease, stroke is the most frequent cause of ASCVD m...

Stratification of carotid atheromatous plaque using interpretable deep learning methods on B-mode ultrasound images
Annu Int Conf IEEE Eng Med Biol Soc. 2021 Nov;2021:3902-3905. doi: 10.1109/EMBC46164.2021.9630402.ABSTRACTCarotid atherosclerosis is the major cause of ischemic stroke resulting in significant rates of mortality and disability annually. Early diagnosis of such cases is of great importance, since it enables clinicians to apply a more effective treatment strategy. This paper introduces an interpretable classification approach of carotid ultrasound images for the risk assessment and stratification of patients with carotid atheromatous plaque. To address the highly imbalanced distribution of patients between the symptomatic an...

Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number as a Marker and Mediator of Stroke Prognosis: Observational and Mendelian Randomization Analyses
CONCLUSIONS: Buffy coat mtDNA-CN is a novel and robust marker of post-stroke prognosis that may also be a causal determinant of post-stroke outcomes.CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE: This study provides class II evidence that low buffy coat mtDNA-CN (>1-standard deviation) was associated with worse baseline severity and 1-month outcomes in patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.PMID:34880091 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000013165

Importance of sex and gender in ischaemic stroke and carotid atherosclerotic disease
Eur Heart J. 2021 Nov 26:ehab756. doi: 10.1093/eurheartj/ehab756. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Women are disproportionately affected by stroke, exhibiting higher mortality and disability rates post-stroke than men. Clinical stroke research has historically included mostly men and studies were not properly designed to perform sex- and gender-based analyses, leading to under-appreciation of differences between men and women in stroke presentation, outcomes, and response to treatment. Reasons for these differences are likely multifactorial; some are due to gender-r...

Global burden of cardiovascular diseases attributable to hypertension in young adults from 1990 to 2019
Conclusions: Hypertension attributable CVDs burden in young adults has greatly increased from 1990 to 2019, with considerably spatiotemporal and sexual heterogeneity. The largest burden was borne by middle-income countries, especially by men. Establishment of geographically and sexually tailored strategies were needed to prevent hypertension-related CVDs in young adults.

Bridging Therapy With Heparin Before Starting Rivaroxaban in Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: The composite of ischemic events and major bleeding was more frequent in patients with NVAF who received bridging therapy with low-dose heparin than in those who started treatment directly with rivaroxaban after ischemic stroke or TIA.PMID:34789635 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-21-0617

Incidence and Risk Factors of Future Need for Long-Term Care Insurance in Japanese Elderly Patients With Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction
CONCLUSIONS: In elderly patients with LV systolic dysfunction, the incidence of LTCI requirement was more common than that for community-dwelling people; its risk factors did not include LVEF, but included many other non-cardiac comorbidities and therapies, suggesting the need for interdisciplinary cooperation to prevent disabilities.PMID:34789610 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-21-0580
