The impact of maternal penicillin allergy on neonatal care and health care cost
Less effective antibiotics are often administered to pregnant women with reported penicillin allergy and group B streptococcus (GBS) colonization, which results in additional testing and increased observation time of the neonatal population. We suspect that healthcare costs and length of stay is thereby increased in neonates of mothers who report penicillin allergy.

Skin testing and oral amoxicillin challenge in the outpatient allergy and clinical immunology clinic in penicillin-allergic pregnant women
Penicillin allergy is commonly reported. In pregnant women, reported penicillin allergy is associated with negative health outcomes and suboptimal group B streptococcal prophylaxis. For penicillin allergic individuals, skin testing followed by observed oral challenge is recommended. Prior data demonstrate a low risk of adverse reaction with skin testing in pregnant women, but subsequent oral challenge was not routinely pursued.

Sensitisation patterns and allergy outcomes in pregnant women living in the urban area
Worldwide, allergy affects more than one billion people, with particularly rising prevalence in industrialised areas. Specifically, young adults appear to be predominantly targeted for an allergy diagnosis. Al...

From the Pages of Allergy Watch
For this installment of From the Pages of Allergy Watch I've selected articles of interest from recent issues of Allergy Watch. The first, reviewed by Dr Oppenheimer, examines the perinatal risk for uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy. The next, reviewed by Dr Knox, investigates the impact of electronic sensors on inhalers impacting asthma control. The third, reviewed by Dr Chipps, analyzes data from children with asthma showing the challenges of confirming the diagnosis.

Food allergy across the globe
The prevalence of food allergy (FA) is increasing in some areas of the globe, highlighting the need for better strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and therapy. In the last few decades, we have made great strides in understanding the causes and mechanisms underlying FAs, prompting guideline updates. Earlier guidelines recommended avoidance of common food allergens during pregnancy and lactation and delaying the introduction of allergenic foods in children aged between 1 and 3 years. Recent guidelines for allergy prevention recommend consumption of a healthy and diverse diet without eliminating or increasing the consumptio...

Safety and Outcomes of Penicillin Allergy Evaluation in Pregnant Women
Penicillin allergy in pregnancy is associated with increased morbidity and the use of less effective antibiotics. Penicillin allergy evaluation in pregnancy is now recommended based on obstetric guidelines, but remains infrequent.

Skin Testing as a Biomarker in Drug Allergy
Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2022 Oct 12:S1081-1206(22)01832-4. doi: 10.1016/j.anai.2022.10.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the significant negative impact drug allergies can have on patient care, the diagnosis is largely based on clinical history and there are limited diagnostic tests that can be done at the time of a reaction. Biomarkers are needed to improve the diagnosis and the identification of the culprit medication. Skin testing is the most useful biomarker for immediate and delayed type reactions available but is limited by its low sensitivity. To improve its accuracy and reproducibility, a standardized ...
