Prevalence and predictors of vitamin D deficiency among adults with epilepsy: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency among PWE is prevalent in our local population, suggesting that regular screening should be considered for those at risk. Early identification would allow intervention to reduce the risk of future complications.PMID:37716324 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109432

Managing osteoporosis in COPD
Endocr Metab Immune Disord Drug Targets. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.2174/1871530323666230913105752. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious respiratory disease with high morbidity, disability and mortality worldwide. Every year, many people die from the disease or its comorbidities. Osteoporosis is a common complication of COPD, which can lead to increased fractures in COPD patients, aggravate the disease, and then bring great pain and burden to patients. The possible factors leading to osteoporosis in COPD patients include systemic inflammation, corticosteroid use, vitamin D defic...

Food texture and vitamin D influence mouse mandible form and molar roots
Anat Rec (Hoboken). 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1002/ar.25315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndustrialization influenced several facets of lifestyle, including softer nutrient-poor diets that contributed to vitamin D deficiency in post-industrzialized populations, with concomitantly increased dental problems. Here we simulated a post-industrialized diet in a mouse model to test the effects of diet texture and vitamin D level on mandible and third molar (M3) forms. Mice were raised on a soft diet with vitamin D (VitD) or without it (NoD), or on a hard diet with vitamin D. We hypothesized that a VitD/hard diet is optimal for norma...

Serum vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased risk of γδ T cell exhaustion in HBV-infected patients
In this study, we found that the frequency of circulating Vδ2+ T cell and serum levels of vitamin 25(OH)D3 were significantly decreased in patients with HBV. And serum 25(OH)D3 levels in HBV-infected patients were negatively correlated with HBV DNA load and PD-1 expression on γδ T cells. Interestingly, 1α,25(OH)2 D3 alleviated the exhaustion phenotype of Vδ2 T cells in HBV-infected patients and promoted IFN-β expression in human cytotoxic Vδ2 T cells in vitro. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that vitamin D plays a pivotal role in reversing γδ T-cell exhaustion and is highly promising target for ameliorati...

Influence of Vitamin D Deficiency on Cyclin D1-Induced Parathyroid Tumorigenesis
Endocrinology. 2023 Sep 11:bqad137. doi: 10.1210/endocr/bqad137. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrimary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrinopathy for which several pathogenic mechanisms, including cyclin D1 overexpression, have been identified. Vitamin D nutritional status may influence parathyroid tumorigenesis, but evidence remains circumstantial. To assess the potential influence of vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency on initiation or progression of parathyroid tumorigenesis, we superimposed vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency on parathyroid tumor-prone PTH-cyclin D1 transgenic mice. Mice were placed on diet...
