Comparative outcomes associated with rivaroxaban versus warfarin use in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation or acute venous thromboembolism managed in the United States: a systematic review of observational studies
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review supports findings from subgroup analyses of randomized controlled trials that, compared with warfarin, rivaroxaban is associated with generally neutral or positive effects on thrombosis and a mixed picture on bleeding outcomes in older adults with either NVAF or VTE treated in the United States.PMID:37584187 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2023.2247988

The Price of Keeping the Rhythm: Increased Bleeding Risk in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Concurrently Prescribed Amiodarone and Factor Xa Inhibitors
Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia affecting nearly 2% of the population of the United States.1 Patients with atrial fibrillation are twice as likely to have a myocardial infarction and five-times as likely to have a stroke.1 Current guidelines recommend antiarrhythmic pharmacotherapy in patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation as first-line management.2-4 Amiodarone is a very effective, and therefore, a commonly prescribed agent for this purpose.5 Anticoagulation is a key tenet in the management of atrial fibrillation due to the increased tendency of left atrial appendage clot formati...

E-111 Repeat thrombectomy after large vessel occlusion stroke: incidence, clinical and technical outcomes
ConclusionsRepeat EVT for patients with re-occlusion within 30 days of thrombectomy is associated with favorable improvement in NIHSS, similar functional outcomes to patients undergoing single EVT, but has significantly higher risk of hemorrhagic conversion.Disclosures Y. Characteristics and Outcomes of Children with Cerebral Sinus Venous Thrombosis
ConclusionsCSVT, which has a U-shaped age distribution, is an uncommon condition in children. Stroke is common in children with CSVT, and it is associated with an increased need for mechanical ventilation and increased mortality. The need for mechanical ventilation is more common in infants, and it is associated with increased mortality across all age groups.

Poststroke venous thromboembolism and neutrophil activation: an illustrated review
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2023 Apr 29;7(4):100170. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100170. eCollection 2023 May.ABSTRACTPatients with acute ischemic stroke are at a high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), estimated to affect approximately 80,000 patients with stroke each year in the United States. The prevalence of symptomatic DVT after acute stroke is approximately 10%. VTE is associated with increased rates of in-hospital death and disability, with higher prevalence of in-hospital complications and increased 1-year mortality in patients with stroke. Current guidelines recommend the use of ...

Stroke-related risk factors during pregnancy in women who underwent metabolic and bariatric surgery compared with women who have not undergone metabolic and bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: MBS helps women lose weight and decrease the incidence of some pregnancy-related risk factors for stroke. However, there is a notable racial health disparity.PMID:37150625 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.03.017

Choice and Timing of Antithrombotic After Ischemic Stroke, Intracerebral Hemorrhage or Cerebral Venous Thrombosis
CNS Neurol Disord Drug Targets. 2023 Mar 9. doi: 10.2174/1871527322666230309100626. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is a multifactorial vascular disease and remains a leading cause of disability in the United States. Strokes can be ischemic or hemorrhagic in nature and secondary to arterial or venous disease, making determining the etiology and secondary prevention strategy important for preservation of the injured brain, prevention of recurrent strokes, and in the maintenance of good functional outcomes for patients impacted by stroke. In this narrative review, we provide a synopsis of the available medical evidence ...

Intravenous Thrombolytics in the Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo review the current evidence and ongoing clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of tenecteplase (TNK), an alternative tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), in the acute management of arterial ischemic stroke (AIS). To date, alteplase is the only tPA approved by the United States FDA for use in AIS.Recent FindingsThere have been multiple phase two and three trials investigating the safety and efficacy of TNK in AIS. In patients with AIS due to large vessel occlusion, one randomized controlled trial demonstrated superiority of TNK for vessel recanalization rates and long-term functional o...
