Moxibustion for stroke: Systematic review, meta-analysis, and GRADE-based recommendations
ConclusionMoxibustion may be effective as an adjunctive treatment for patients with stroke. Therefore, we recommend to consider moxibustion as an optional intervention to improve neurological deficits and ADL in stroke patients. Further research is warranted to fully reflect the use of moxibustion in real-world clinical practice and include clinical trials with a better methodological quality.

Overview of Cochrane reviews on Chinese herbal medicine for stroke
ConclusionThis overview reveals the potential efficacy of herbal medicines for the treatment of stroke in terms of neurological deficit improvement. However, due to the high risk of bias in the reviews’ studies, an affirmative conclusion for the recommendation of herbal medicine for clinical practice could not be drawn.

Application of survival analysis techniques to determine the optimal number of acupuncture therapy sessions for stroke patients.
CONCLUSION: Stroke patients who were going to improve saw a significant improvement in Barthel index by the 16th acupuncture session and the marginal improvement declined substantially afterward. Our approach required minimal data available from the medical records of a non-academic facility, yet practical implication could be achieved. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was retrospectively registered on 18 August 2017 with the Thai Clinical Trials Registry (ref. TCTR20170822002). PMID: 31958974 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Longshengzhi Capsules Improve Ischemic Stroke Outcomes and Reperfusion Injury via the Promotion of Anti-Inflammatory and Neuroprotective Effects in MCAO/R Rats.
This study aimed to define the effects of LSZ on proinflammatory mediators and neuroprotective effects on middle cerebral artery occlusion and refusion (MCAO/R) rats. Rats were treated with different doses of LSZ (0.54, 1.62, and 4.32 g/(kg·d)) in a week after model building. LSZ could improve the survival rate, ischemic stroke outcome, and infarct volume. In addition, significant decrease was observed in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and inflammatory factor levels in LSZ-treated groups, concomitant with increase in activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), neurosynaptic remodeling, and decrease in brain edema. I...

Electroacupuncture promotes motor function and functional connectivity in rats with ischemic stroke: an animal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.
CONCLUSION: EA at LI11 and ST36 could enhance the functional connectivity between the left motor cortex and the motor function-related brain regions, including the motor cortex, sensory cortex and striatum, in rats. EA exhibits potential as a treatment for ischemic stroke. PMID: 32576025 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dry needling for the management of spasticity, pain, and range of movement in adults after stroke: A systematic review.
CONCLUSION: The management of adults after stroke with DN may impact positively on spasticity, pain, and ROM. However, there was significant heterogeneity across trials in terms of sample size, control groups, treated muscles, and outcome measures, and a meta-analysis was not feasible. Further research should include proper blinding, sham placebo DN as control intervention, and investigate long-term effects. PMID: 32951759 [PubMed - in process]

Effect of Huoxiang Zhengqi Pill on Early Neurological Deterioration in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke Undergoing Recanalization Therapy and Predictive Effect of Essen Score.
Authors: Huang ZX, Lin J, Zhang C, Dai YY, Lin S, Liu X Abstract Early neurologic deterioration (END) in the acute phase of ischemic stroke is a serious clinical event, which is closely related to poor prognosis. Therefore, it is important to identify presentation features that predict END and take relevant treatment measures, as they could help to prevent the deterioration of high-risk patients. The prospective intervention study was carried out from January 2018 to December 2019. We included consecutive patients hospitalized for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) within 6 hours of onset. Patients were randomly assigned ...

The Therapeutic Effect of Electroacupuncture Therapy for Ischemic Stroke.
Authors: Yu BH, Xing Y, Zhang F Abstract Electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation is a supplementary therapy and commonly applied in treatment of ischemic stroke in clinic. Stroke is an important cause of long-term disability in individuals in both developing and developed countries. In our review, we show the application of EA stimulation for apoplectic pain, limbs spasticity, blood flow interruption, depression, swallowing dysfunction, aphasia, urinary incontinence, cognition and memory impairment, and constipation following stroke in patients and the related mechanisms in animals. The effectiveness of EA involves wit...
