Overcoming Challenges in the Collection of Patient-Reported Outcomes in an Ambulatory Academic Neurology Clinic (I8.013)
Conclusion: Systematic digital collection of PRO is feasible and informative, and did not interfere with clinic operations. Survey completers differ from non-completers in important ways, and efforts such as multilingual PRO survey tools and additional supports should be implemented to ensure collection from vulnerable patient populations. Further research is warranted to validate these findings.Disclosure: Dr. Moura has nothing to disclose. Dr. Schwamm has nothing to disclose. Dr. Moura has nothing to disclose. Placental Pathology in Neonatal Stroke: A Retrospective Case-Control Study (I15.009)
Conclusions: Major placental abnormalities were common in stroke cases relative to controls, with trends towards different patterns in arterial versus venous stroke. Many findings were subacute to chronic and reflect intrauterine stressors that may predispose to acute stroke in the perinatal period. We are continuing to investigate these abnormalities and their implications for screening, monitoring, and even prevention of neonatal stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Bernson-Leung has nothing to disclose. Factors Associated with Delay in Presentation to the Hospital for Young Adults with Ischemic Stroke
Conclusions: A majority of young adults with ischemic stroke presented outside the time window for intravenous fibrinolysis. Diabetes, single status, and unemployed status were associated with delayed presentation.Cerebrovasc Dis 2016;42:10-14

Validating a Pragmatic Approach to Cognitive Screening in Stroke Prevention Clinics Using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Stratifying participants into 3 categories facilitates the identification of a homogenous group at low risk for CI, as well as 2 other groups with intermediate and higher risk. This approach could facilitate clinical care pathways and patient selection for research.

Missed Ischemic Stroke Diagnosis in the Emergency Department by Emergency Medicine and Neurology Services Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Atypical symptoms associated with posterior circulation strokes lead to misdiagnoses. This was true at both an academic center and a large community hospital. Future studies need to focus on the evaluation of identification systems and tools in the emergency department to improve the accuracy of stroke diagnosis.

Use of Warfarin at Discharge Among Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation in China Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The rate of warfarin use remains low among patients with ischemic stroke and known nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in China. Hospital size and academic status together with patient age, heart failure, heavy alcohol drinking, international normalized ratio in hospital, and stroke severity on admission were each independently associated with the use of warfarin at discharge. There is much room for improvement for secondary stroke prevention in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients in China.

Rodent stroke model guidelines for preclinical stroke trials (1st edition).
RODENT STROKE MODEL GUIDELINES FOR PRECLINICAL STROKE TRIALS (1ST EDITION). J Exp Stroke Transl Med. 2009 Jan 1;2(2):2-27 Authors: Liu S, Zhen G, Meloni BP, Campbell K, Winn HR Abstract Translational stroke research is a challenging task that needs long term team work of the stroke research community. Highly reproducible stroke models with excellent outcome consistence are essential for obtaining useful data from preclinical stroke trials as well as for improving inter-lab comparability. However, our review of literature shows that the infarct variation coefficient of commonly performed stroke models r...

Textbook of Stroke Medicine
A successful medical textbook is one that contains well-researched and current material that is clearly written, supported by helpful diagrams and tables, and also concise and manageable. It should be comprehended within a finite period of time that, for the physician, is filled with activity in an academic or medical environment. I am writing this review from the viewpoint of a stroke neurologist who is involved in teaching medical students, residents, midlevel health care professionals, and patients and their families. I find Textbook of Stroke Medicine by Brainin and Heiss to be an exceptional book that meets and someti...

Editorial A neurology revival in Latin America
From Oct 31 to Nov 5, 2015, the neurological community will meet in Santiago, Chile, for the World Congress of Neurology (WCN 2015), the biennial event organised by the World Federation of Neurology (WFN). In the apt words of the Congress President, Renato Verdugo, “it is the right time to have a World Congress of Neurology in Chile.” In upper middle-income and high-income countries of Latin America, such as Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, public and academic interest in neurological care and research are thriving, particularly in the fields of dementia and stroke.
