Dysphagia-related acute stroke complications: A retrospective observational cohort study
Dysphagia, or impaired swallowing, is reported to affect between 8.1% and 45.3% of patients following stroke.1 Dysphagia is associated with longer length of stay (LOS) in acute hospital, increased healthcare costs, and greater long-term institutionalisation.2,3 Aspiration pneumonia mediates a significant proportion of this deleterious association and, in its own right, is associated with increased length of stay in hospital,4 poorer post-stroke functioning,5,6 and increased mortality.7

Risk factors for and outcomes of poststroke pneumonia in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with mechanical thrombectomy
ConclusionMore than one in three patients with AIS treated with MT developed PSP. Dysphagia, intubation, higher BMI, and SII were associated with PSP in these patients. Patients with AIS who develop PSP are more likely to experience negative outcomes. The prevention and identification of PSP are necessary to reduce mortality and improve clinical outcomes.

Subdural evacuating port system with subdural thrombolysis for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma in patients older than 80 years
ConclusionAs an exhaustive drainage strategy, SEPS followed by thrombolysis is safe and effective with excellent outcomes among elderly patients. It is a technically easy and less invasive procedure with similar complications, mortality, and recurrence rates compared with burr-hole drainage in the literature.

Predictors of 30-day mortality among patients with stroke admitted at a tertiary teaching hospital in Northwestern Tanzania: A prospective cohort study
ConclusionStroke is associated with a high 30-day mortality rate in Northwestern Tanzania. Concerted efforts are warranted in managing patients with stroke, with particular attention to individuals with severe strokes, ECG abnormalities, and swallowing difficulties to reduce early morbidity and mortality.

Inflammatory response biomarkers nomogram for predicting pneumonia in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionSIRI and PLR at admission can be utilized as prognostic inflammatory biomarkers in patients with SICH in the upper brain treated with SAP. A nomogram covering SIRI and PLR can more accurately predict SAP in patients' supratentorial SICH. SAP can influence the length of hospital stay and the clinical outcome.

Risk factors and complications associated with intra-operative or post-operative identification of a PFO in cardiac surgery patients: A cohort study
ConclusionPatent foramen ovale finding incidence in peri-operative cardiac surgery care was rare (2%) but post-operative finding of PFO was associated with a increased risk of ischemic strokes, worsened respiratory outcomes, and prolonged hospitalization.

DiscussionWe conclude that the ICF-based early progressive mobilization protocol is an effective and feasible intervention tool. For validity, more mobilization interventions might lead to less pneumonia, duration of mechanical ventilation and length of stay for patients with severe aSAH in the NICU, Moreover, it is necessary to pay attention over potential adverse events (especially line problems), although we did not find serious safety events.
