A Ruptured Cystic Echinococcosis in the Gallbladder and Intra/Extrahepatic Biliary Tract, Radiological and Surgical Imaging Findings
Turkiye Parazitol Derg. 2023 Sep 18;47(3):200-203. doi: 10.4274/tpd.galenos.2023.65265.ABSTRACTCystic echinococcosis is a common parasitic infestation that can still cause serious complications in endemic areas. Intrabiliary rupture is a well-defined complication, but rupture into the gallbladder is rare. The disease may present with cholecystitis and cholangitis. Clinicians and radiologists working in the emergency room will find the management of the disease much easier if they become familiar with the clinical and radiological findings of the cyst. In this article, a 28-year-old male admitted to the emergency department...

Hosimosines A-E, structurally diverse cytisine derivatives from the seeds of Ormosia hosiei Hemsl. et Wils
Fitoterapia. 2023 Aug 28:105661. doi: 10.1016/j.fitote.2023.105661. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOrmosia hosiei Hemsl. et Wils (Fabaceae family) is an arbor species endemic to China. The seeds of O. hosiei have been used as traditional Chinese medicine to treat hernia, abdominal pain, blood stasis and amenorrhea. Cytisine-like and angustifoline type alkaloids were main components identified from this plant. In our research on the bioactive alkaloids from the promising Chinese medicinal plants, four new angustifoline type alkaloids (1-4) and a new cytisine-like alkaloid (5), named hosimosine A-E, together with 13 known ana...

Exploring the anticancer properties of the gum of < em > Ferula gummosa < /em > : impact on cytotoxicity, caspase 3/7 activity and apoptosis, and gene expression in SW-480 cells
This study aimed to identify the chemical components of the gum of F. gummosa and investigate its effects on SW-480 cells. The experiments included MTT, clonogenic, micronucleus formation, acridine orange/ethidium bromide stain, DNA degradation, caspase 3/7 activity assay, and in vitro wound-healing experiment and investigating the expression of BAX, BCL2, MTOR, and PTEN genes. Chemical analysis using GC/MS identified 102 compounds. The gum had a significant cytotoxic effect on SW-480 cells, with an IC50 value of 1.8 µg/ml for 48 hours. The gum induced apoptosis. Microscopic observations revealed a decrease in cell prolif...

Mpox: Rapid Evidence Review
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Jul;108(1):78-83.ABSTRACTMpox (formerly monkeypox) is a DNA virus of the Orthopoxvirus genus, similar to smallpox. Although mpox was endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and parts of Africa, increasing numbers of cases were reported worldwide in 2022. More than 30,000 cases have been reported in the United States, and worldwide 98% of cases are found in men who have sex with men. Transmission is primarily through contact with skin lesions. The rash of mpox is often vesiculopustular and may be localized to the anogenital region or distributed on the face, trunk, limbs, palms, and soles. Two...

Ascariasis causing small bowel obstruction in an adult female: A case report
CONCLUSION: In a patient presented with symptoms and signs suggestive of bowel obstruction, Ascariasis should be considered as a differential diagnosis for those from endemic areas. The treating physician should have a high index of suspicion.PMID:37437322 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijscr.2023.108486

Pancreatic tuberculosis in a liver transplant recipient: a case report
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2023 Jul 10;65:e44. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202365044. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe pancreatic form of tuberculosis (TB) is rare and its diagnosis is challenging, since it manifests itself with non-specific symptoms and non-pathognomonic radiological findings, mimicking a neoplasia of the pancreas. Here, we report the case of a patient who had previously undergone liver transplantation and sought care for abdominal pain, weight loss, anorexia, hematochezia and postprandial fullness. Following an exploratory laparotomy and nucleic acid amplification testing on a pancreatic sample that had been co...
