In-office, multisinus balloon dilation: 1-Year outcomes from a prospective, multicenter, open label trial.
CONCLUSION: In-office, multisinus balloon dilation is safe, effective, and well tolerated. Patients reported significant reductions in both sinonasal symptoms and health care use after balloon dilation. Efficacy observed at 1 and 6 month follow-up was sustained through 1 year with a very low rate of revision surgery. This study was a part of the clinical trial NCT01612780 registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov. PMID: 24598043 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Evaluation of olfaction in patients with pemphigus vulgaris.
CONCLUSION: PV causes olfactory dysfunction leading to eventual hyposmia that decreases quality of life. We suggest that olfactory testing be included in PV evaluation for the diagnosis and treatment of hyposmia, when necessary. PMID: 24717939 [PubMed - in process]

Resolution of acute IgE-mediated allergy with development of eosinophilic esophagitis triggered by the same food
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is characterized by isolated eosinophilic infiltration of the esophagus that can present at any age and symptomatically mimic gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD). The symptoms vary by age from failure to thrive in young children, to abdominal pain, regurgitation, and vomiting seen in school-age children and dysphagia and food impaction in adolescents and adults. Atopy is commonly observed in EoE, with 28% to 86% of adults and 42% to 93% of children having another allergic disease and 71% to 93% of the subjects having positive skin prick test results to aeroallergens. In addition, high rate...

Acne Vulgaris: an Inflammatory Disease Even Before the Onset of Clinical Lesions.
Abstract Acne is a chronic self-limited disease, which affects mostly teenagers, without gender difference. In recent years, the incidence has increased in female adults. The factors involved in this epidemiological observation are still under discussion in the literature. Clinically, acne is characterized by different types of lesions. The disease affects the regions rich in sebaceous glands (face, chest and upper back). The clinical lesions are: open and closed comedones, erythematous papules, pustules, nodules and different types of scars. Taking into consideration the general concept of inflammation (redness, ...

Comparison of topical anesthetic effects of lidocaine, prilocaine, ropivacaine, and bupivacaine in transnasal fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopy.
CONCLUSION: To provide ideal examination comfort and optimum patient tolerability during TFL evaluation of upper respiratory airway topical lidocaine and prilocaine applications were found to be more efficacious and effective medication for anesthesia of the intranasal mucosa compared with bupivacaine and ropivacaine solutions. Mast cell density in cardio-esophageal mucosa.
In this study we wanted to obtain an estimate of mast cell density in this region and compare it with mast cell density in antrum. From April 2007 till March 2010, we chose children (<14 years old) who underwent upper endoscopy and from whom the taken biopsy was stated to be from lower third of esophagus, but in microscopic examination either cardio- esophageal mucosa or only cardiac mucosa was seen. Mast cells were counted by Giemsa stain at ×1000 magnification in 10 fields. 71 children (<14 years old) were included in this study of which, 63.4% (n=45) were female and 36.6% (n=26) were male. The mean age of patient...

Effect of aerosolized fibrin sealant on hemostasis and wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery: A prospective randomized study.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with polyvinyl acetal sponge, aerosolized FS shows beneficial effects on hemostasis and wound healing after FESS. The application of FS resulted in a high degree of patient satisfaction without additional morbidity. PMID: 25197921 [PubMed - in process]

An Update on Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs.
Abstract Disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) is a category of drugs which is used as medication in various arthritic conditions to arrest the progression of disease along with relief from pain. About 83% of population worldwide uses DMARDs. Withdrawal of COX-2 inhibitors because of cardiovascular side effects and short-term action associated with glucocorticoids provided a motivation for development of newer DMARDs. Currently non- biological DMARDs like methotrexate, sulfasalazine, hydroxychloroquine and azathioprine serve the purpose of relieving pain and inhibiting the progression of disease. Biologic...

Occupational Rhinoconjunctivitis due to Maize in a Snack Processor: A Cross-Reactivity Study Between Lipid Transfer Proteins From Different Cereals and Peach.
We report the case of a snack processor who developed occupational rhinoconjunctivitis due to maize brand exposure during the extrusion process, and who experienced abdominal pain upon drinking beer. The allergens implicated and the cross-reactivity between non-specific lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) from different cereals and peach were investigated. Skin prick tests and specific IgE to cereal flours, pulmonary functions tests and specific conjunctival and inhalation challenges to maize extract were performed. In vitro studies included IgE immunoblotting and ELISA inhibition assays. Skin prick tests with maize flour, maiz...

A case of eosinophilic fasciitis presenting as pitting edema of the lower extremities.
We report a 19-year-old female who presented with pitting edema in both lower extremities. She had a history of excessive physical activity before her symptoms developed. Physical examination revealed 2+ pitting edema in both lower legs. She complained of mild pain in both knee joints and feet, with no tenderness or heating sensations. Laboratory results were unremarkable except for severe eosinophilia. Parasite infection, venous thrombosis, and cardiac and renal problems were excluded. A magnetic resonance imaging study of both lower extremities revealed increased signal intensity in the subcutaneous lesions, consistent w...

Chronic Pain: Cytokines, Lymphocytes and Chemokines.
Abstract Chronic pain is a debilitating condition and, in most cases, difficult to treat. A prominent example of this is neuropathic pain. Understanding pathophysiological mechanisms of pain and, therefore, make this knowledge into an effective treatment is still a challenge to experts. Pain can now be considered a neuro-immune disorder, since recent data indicates critical involvement of innate and adaptive immune responses following injury, and this interaction plays an important role in the onset and perpetuation of chronic pain. The aim of this article is to review the relationship between immune system and ch...

Prognostic factors for survival in patients with acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall survival rate remained approximately 50% in patients with AIFR. The prognosis of AIFR is significantly influenced by underlying diseases, accompanying neutropenia, CRP levels, symptom duration, involvement of septum, and the presence of facial swelling. Elevation of CRP, in particular, was an independent predictor of poor outcomes and should be monitored appropriately. PMID: 25590320 [PubMed - in process]

The Ambidextrous Cyclooxygenase: An Enduring Target.
Abstract With the discovery of COX, pain has not been treated in a relentless manner. Numbers of drugs with fewer side effects were discovered and are used successfully for treatment of pain. With new research coming into being since the discovery of COX, it was established that COX can be targeted not only for treatment of pain but for curing various diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, Glaucoma etc. With the sighting of COX-3, another isoform of COX, new diseases are being targeted for better treatment. Alcohol Abuse and Pancreatic Diseases: An Overview.
CONCLUSIONS: Chronic abuse of alcohol, but not occasional alcoholic intoxication, causes pancreatic damage. Regarding pancreatic neoplasms, the role of alcohol is under debate in ductal pancreatic adenocarcinoma as well as in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Few relevant patents are also described in this review. PMID: 25925405 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
