Medical morbidities in people following hip and knee arthroplasty: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative
Conclusions People who undergo THA or TKA may present with a variety of medical morbidities. Accordingly consideration should be made on how to encourage the adoption and maintenance of physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices for this population.

Instrumented shoes for activity classification in the elderly
Ageing is frequently accompanied by loss of mobility, frailty, fear of falling and a greater risk of injury or disease caused by declining physiologic system dynamics [1]. It is crucial to remain active or become active again while aging, since suitable levels of physical activity (PA) can improve one's health and quality of life [2]. An increase in PA is linked to lower morbidity and mortality [3] by reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, dementia, diabetes and osteoporosis [4–6].

Musculoskeletal manifestations of Fabry disease: A retrospective study
Conclusion The diagnosis of Fabry disease is usually delayed, due to confusion with more common disorders. Musculoskeletal manifestations may constitute the presenting symptoms. Past or present pain in the extremities is typical. Osteoporosis may develop early and become severe. Together with the family history, the presence of musculoskeletal manifestations can lead to the correct diagnosis by prompting alpha-galactosidase assays in males and genetic testing in females. Fabry disease is often responsible for musculoskeletal manifestations, of which the most common are pain in the extremities and osteoporosis. These manife...

The predicted lifetime costs and health consequences of calcium and vitamin D supplementation for fracture prevention—the impact of cardiovascular effects
Conclusions We conclude that the magnitude of potential cardiovascular side effects is crucial for the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of CaD supplementation in elderly women.

Clinical characteristics and risk factors of postoperative pneumonia after hip fracture surgery: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionIntrinsic factors and major clinical interventions were all important risk factors of POP in patients after hip fracture surgery. Targeted preventive measures to mitigate the above risk factors may help in reducing the incidence of POP.

Osteoporosis and ischemic cardiovascular disease
Publication date: Available online 9 November 2016 Source:Joint Bone Spine Author(s): Michel Laroche, Virginie Pécourneau, Hubert Blain, Véronique Breuil, Roland Chapurlat, Bernard Cortet, Bruno Sutter, Yannick Degboe Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease were long viewed as independent of each other. However, numerous epidemiological studies, which are discussed in the first part of this review, have provided incontrovertible evidence of a link. Thus, the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke is higher in patients with a history of osteoporotic fracture or low bone mineral density than in non-osteoporotic patien...

Predictors of near-term fracture in osteoporotic women aged ≥65 years, based on data from the study of osteoporotic fractures
ConclusionsSeveral clinical characteristics predictive of hip and non-vertebral fracture within a 1-year follow-up period among elderly women with osteoporosis were identified, and a subset of those for hip fracture was incorporated into a risk assessment tool. Assessment of these risk factors may help guide osteoporosis treatment choices by identifying patients in whom there is urgency to treat. Additional research is needed to validate the findings of this study and the accuracy of the risk assessment tool.

Vascular Involvement in Axial Spondyloarthropathies
Publication date: Available online 19 May 2018 Source:Joint Bone Spine Author(s): Clément Prati, Céline Demougeot, Xavier Guillot, Maxime Sondag, Frank Verhoeven, Daniel Wendling Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease that involves the entheses, causing inflammatory pain and functional impairments. Patients may experience extraarticular manifestations such as uveitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease. These, together with the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis and the development of spinal fusion, are the main determinants of adverse disease outcomes. As with ...

25(OH) vitamin D and functional outcomes in older adults admitted to rehabilitation units: the safari study
ConclusionsIn our study, 25(OH)D concentration showed a positive association with functional outcomes at 3  months. The association is stronger below the usual cutoff for “deficiency.” Dosage of 25(OH)D concentration may help identify geriatric rehabilitation patients at risk for a worse functional recovery.
