Influence of accelerated arterial ageing in growth restricted cohorts on adult-onset cardiovascular diseases
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 May 19. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00134.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpidemiologists have long documented higher risk of adult-onset cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as stroke, hypertension and coronary artery disease) and mortality from circulatory causes in low birth weight cohorts (poor in utero substrate supply). Utero-placental insufficiency and in utero hypoxemic state induced alterations in arterial structure and compliance are important initiating factors for adult-onset hypertension. The mechanistic links between fetal growth restriction and CVD include decreased arterial...

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Carotid Artery Stenosis (CAS) Among Cardiac Surgery Patients
CONCLUSION: This study shows a high prevalence of CAS among cardiac surgery patients. In addition, older age, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension were found to be major risk factors for CAS. Gender and weight status were not associated with CAS. Preoperative carotid duplex scan is a useful exam to identify CAS among cardiac surgery patients and, therefore, to predict and reduce postoperative neurological complications.PMID:37200653 | PMC:PMC10186855 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.37634

Association of visceral adiposity index with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis: a population-based study in Shandong, China
CONCLUSIONS: The possible correlation between VAI and aICAS was found to be positive for the first time among Chinese rural residents over 40 years old. A higher VAI was found to be significantly associated with aICAS among the participants who were underweight or normal weight, and these results may provide additional risk stratification information for aICAS.PMID:37198613 | DOI:10.1186/s12944-023-01831-1

The Rationalisation of Intra-Operative Imaging During Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: Current data have shown EUS to have superiority over manual palpation and transoesophageal echocardiography in the prevention of CVAs following cardiac surgery. Yet, EUS has not been implemented as a routine standard of care. Extensive adoption of EUS in clinical practice is warranted to aid large, randomised trials before making prospective conclusions on the efficacy of this screening method.PMID:36870922 | DOI:10.1016/j.hlc.2023.01.016

Carotid atherosclerosis in people of European, South Asian and African Caribbean ethnicity in the Southall and Brent revisited study (SABRE)
CONCLUSION: Prevalence of carotid artery atherosclerotic plaques varies by ethnicity, independent of risk factors. Lower plaque prevalence in in AC is consistent with their lower risk of CHD but not their higher risk of stroke. Higher cIMT in AC may be explained by risk factors. The similarity of plaque burden in SA and EA despite established differences in ASCVD risk casts some doubt on the utility of carotid ultrasound as a means of assessing risk across these ethnic groups.PMID:36762303 | PMC:PMC9902363 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.1002820

Dizziness in a tertiary neurological department: A cross ‐sectional study
ConclusionThe diagnosis and management of dizziness remain a challenge for clinicians. Vertigo and light-headedness were the most common symptoms among different types of dizziness. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and stroke/transient ischemic attack were among the leading causes for common dizziness disorders. The prognosis of most dizzy patients was good.

“Optic nerve sheath diameter detects intracranial hypertension in acute malignant middle cerebral artery infarction”
We congratulate the authors for their idea to utilize ultrasound in the decision making to detect the presence of intracranial hypertension which requires the need of decompressive craniectomy surgery in patients with middle cerebral artery infarction1, but we would like to make some comments.

Evaluation of serum levels of homocysteine and C-reactive protein in patients with ischemic stroke
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2022 Jul 31;68(7):56-62. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2022.68.7.10.ABSTRACTStroke is the third most common cause of death in the world. Plasma homocysteine is an emerging risk factor for stroke. Also, previous studies have shown that serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) are significantly associated with mortality and function in patients with ischemic stroke. In the present study, we examined homocysteine and serum CRP levels in patients with ischemic stroke. This descriptive-analytical study was performed on 100 patients with ischemic stroke. Blood samples were taken in the first 24 hours of a str...
