Sex differences in the relation between sex hormones and right ventricular function in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Conclusion: Patients with PAH have lower DHEAs and free testosterone concentrations than controls. Sex-based differences in the relation between DHEAs and RV function may have implications for sex hormone treatment in PAH.

Cardiovascular comorbidities based on impaired pulmonary function in non-smoking population
Conclusion: The prevalence of cardiovascular comorbidities in non-smokers was higher in restrictive group and COPD, compared to normal control. Restrictive group was independently associated with coronary artery disease in non-smokers.

Cardiac function and pulmonary hypertension in Central Asian highlanders at 3250 m
The question addressed by the study Chronic exposure to hypoxia increases pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) in highlanders, but the criteria for diagnosis of high-altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH) are debated. We assessed cardiac function and PAP in highlanders at 3250 m and explored HAPH prevalence using different definitions. Patients and methods Central Asian highlanders free of overt cardiorespiratory disease, permanently living at 2500–3500 m compared to age-matched lowlanders living <800 m. Participants underwent echocardiography close to their altitude of residence (at 3250 m versus ...

The differences of carotid atherosclerosis among non-OSAHS and OSAHS patients of different severities: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionAs far as CIMT, carotid plaque, blood flow velocity, and blood lipid are concerned, the severity of CA is not affected by the severity of OSAHS accordantly. The relationship between OSAHS and CA may not be dose dependent.Trial registrationThis study has been registered on clinical trials (No. NCT03665818).

Association between the high risk for obstructive sleep apnea and intracranial carotid artery calcification in patients with acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsThis study showed that the presence of calcium in symptomatic intracranial ICA was related to high risk for OSA in patients with acute ischemic stroke.

Is there an association among sleep duration, nap, and stroke? Findings from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study
ConclusionIn this elderly Chinese population, short total sleep duration per 24 h, not merely daytime napping or nighttime sleep, was significantly associated with an increased risk of stroke. Preventive measures for stroke may require a focus on elderly, sedentary individuals who report other health problems.

Cardio-Pulmonary Changes After Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction with Endobronchial One-Way Valves
ConclusionBronchoscopic valve treatment seemed to have positive effects on cardio-pulmonary hemodynamics, and these changes were correlated with reductions of lobar volume.

Pulmonary vascular and right ventricular burden during exercise in interstitial lung disease.
CONCLUSIONS: ILD with resting and exercise PH is associated with increased exercise RV work, reduced pulmonary vascular reserve and reduced peak VO2. The findings highlight the role of pulmonary vascular and RV burden to ILD exercise limit. PMID: 32173491 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

When it all comes down to pressure: right ventricular ejection fraction at cardiac catheterisation
In the present issue of the European Respiratory Journal, Heerdt et al. [1] report on the validation of right ventricularejection fraction (RVEF) calculated from a pressure curve at cardiac catheterisation. This is of great interest as right ventricular (RV) function is the main determinant of symptomatology and outcome in pulmonary hypertension [2], and RVEF accordingly adds significantly to risk stratification in these patients [3]. However, ejection fraction (EF) is a ratio of stroke volume (SV) to end-diastolic volume (EDV), with no pressure in the equation. So, how is it possible to calculate a volume ratio from pressure measurements?

Increased platelet activation in sleep apnea subjects with intermittent hypoxemia
ConclusionsIncreased platelet activation was present in otherwise healthy subjects with intermittent nocturnal hypoxemia due to underlying OSA. This prothrombotic milieu in the vasculature is likely a key contributing factor toward development of thrombosis and cardiovascular disease.Trial registrationNCT00859950
