Predicting the risk of stroke in patients with late-onset epilepsy: A machine learning approach
CONCLUSION: The stroke risk in patients with epilepsy was relatively high and could be predicted based on comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart failure, and alcohol dependence. Knowing and addressing these factors may help reduce the risk of stroke in patients with epilepsy.PMID:34325155 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2021.108211

Prognostic value of the H2FPEF score in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation
ConclusionsThe H2FPEF score serves as an independent predictor of adverse CV and heart failure outcome among TAVI patients with preserved EF. A high H2FPEF score is associated with the presence of paradoxical low ‐flow, low‐gradient AS, the HFpEF in patients with AS. By identifying patients in advanced stages of HFpEF, the H2FPEF score might be useful as a risk prediction tool in patients with preserved EF scheduled for TAVI.

Heart failure is independently associated with white matter lesions: insights from the population ‐based LIFE‐Adult Study
ConclusionsIn addition to age, hypertension, and stroke, the prevalence and duration of HF are independently associated with WML. This observation sets the stage to investigate the prognostic value of WML in HF and the impact of HF therapies on WML.

Influence of cardiovascular risk factors on arterial hypertension and mild cognitive impairment in 4602 participants of the ELITE study
Background: In ELITE (Ernährung, Lebensstil und individuelle Information zur Verhinderung von Herzinfarkt, Schlaganfall und Demenz; german for: Nutrition, Lifestyle and Individual Information for the Prevention of Heart Attack, Stroke and Dementia) data on cardiovascular risk factors, cognitive function and quality of life are prospectively collected, which will be improved through targeted individual information. The aim is to improve the health of the participants and identify the reasons for the lack of implementation. Methods: Risk factors of 4602 participants were linked to (controlled) hypertension and mi...

Impaired hypertension control in France: What the nephrologist needs to know.
This report, based on the latest French studies and surveys, raises an important warning about the situation in France, discusses the main reasons for these results and offers some suggestions for improvement. Otherwise we risk a dramatic increase in the incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, dependency and dementia in the coming years. PMID: 33069630 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-term cardiometabolic disease risk in women with PCOS: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractBACKGROUNDPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with cardiometabolic disease, but recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses of longitudinal studies that quantify these associations are lacking.OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALEIs PCOS a risk factor for cardiometabolic disease?SEARCH METHODSWe searched from inception to September 2019 in MEDLINE and EMBASE using controlled terms (e.g. MESH) and text words for PCOS and cardiometabolic outcomes, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke, myocardial infarction, hypertension (HT), type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic syndrome and dyslipidaemia. Cohort studies and case ...

Artificial Intelligence Is Here To Calm Your Road Rage
I am behind the wheel of a Nissan Leaf, circling a parking lot, trying not to let the day’s nagging worries and checklists distract me to the point of imperiling pedestrians. Like all drivers, I am unwittingly communicating my stress to this vehicle in countless subtle ways: the strength of my grip on the steering wheel, the slight expansion of my back against the seat as I breathe, the things I mutter to myself as I pilot around cars and distracted pedestrians checking their phones in the parking lot. “Hello, Corinne,” a calm voice says from the audio system. “What’s stressing you out right n...

ICDs Have Come a Long Way in 40 Years
Michel Mirowski and his colleagues gave the field of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) a pretty good start, but what's more impressive is how far the technology has advanced since that first human ICD implant in February 1980. In the past 40 years we've seen ICDs become dramatically smaller, longer lasting, more capable, more personalized, subcutaneous (non-transvenous), and even MRI-firendly. And that's not to mention the advanced data connectivity and monitoring capabilities that the latest technologies offer. So without further ado, let's take a look at the current ICD landscape and the companie...
