Comparing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of remote (telehealth and online) cognitive behavioral therapy-based treatments for high-impact chronic pain relative to usual care: study protocol for the RESOLVE multisite randomized control trial
DISCUSSION: This large-scale trial provides a unique opportunity to rigorously evaluate and compare the clinical and cost-effectiveness of 2 relatively low-cost and scalable modalities for providing CBT-CP-based treatments to persons with high-impact chronic pain, including those residing in rural and other medically underserved areas with limited access to these services.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04523714. This trial was registered on 24 August 2020.PMID:36927459 | PMC:PMC10018633 | DOI:10.1186/s13063-023-07165-8

Improving Preclinical Development of Novel Interventions to Treat Pain: Insanity Is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over and Expecting Different Results
Anesth Analg. 2022 Dec 1;135(6):1128-1136. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006249. Epub 2022 Nov 16.ABSTRACTPreclinical pain research has applied state-of-the-art methods over the past 40 years to describe, characterize, and image molecules, cells, and circuits in rodents to understand the pathophysiology of chronic pain. Despite generating a plethora of novel analgesic targets, pharmaceuticals for chronic pain treatment remain largely limited to the same 6 drug classes as present 40 years ago. It is possible that 40 years of effort has brought us to the verge of a paradigm shift and an explosion of novel analgesic drug classes...

The Fibromyalgia Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in Physical Therapy Study (FM-TIPS) Protocol: A Multisite Embedded Pragmatic Trial
Phys Ther. 2022 Aug 29:pzac116. doi: 10.1093/ptj/pzac116. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVES: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a nonpharmacological intervention that provides an electrical current through the skin to produce analgesia. The primary purpose of this study is to examine if the addition of TENS to routine physical therapy improves movement-evoked pain in individuals with fibromyalgia in a physical therapy clinical setting.METHODS: FM-TIPS is a phase III embedded pragmatic clinical trial funded through the National Institutes of Health Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) Initiati...

A review of tobacco regulatory science research on vulnerable populations
This report reviews TCORS-funded research with adult vulnerable populations. The literature search included a list of all TCORS-funded publications compiled by the TCORS-coordinating-center; all TCORS were requested to share publications not in the coordinating-center's list. Only TCORS-funded reports describing an empirical study with an adult vulnerable population published in a peer-reviewed journal between September 2013 and June 2018 were included. 71 reports met inclusion criteria; 39% (28/71) examined tobacco use among those with mental health and medical comorbidities, 34% (24/71) socioeconomic disadvantage, 31% (2...
