Total small vessel disease score and risk of recurrent stroke: Validation in 2 large cohorts
Conclusions: The total SVD score has predictive value for recurrent stroke after TIA/ischemic stroke. Prediction of recurrence in patients with nonlacunar events highlights the potential role of SVD in wider stroke etiology.

An epidemiological survey of stroke among rural Chinese adults results from the Liaoning province
ConclusionsThe annual incidence of stroke and resulting mortality has increased at an accelerated rate. Furthermore, the incidence of stroke in rural China was higher than that found in urban China and Western countries. Hypertension and lipid disorder were important modifiable risk factors. The primary sub‐type of stroke observed in rural China was ischemic stroke. These findings underscored the need for more aggressive efforts to control the risk factors of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases in rural areas.

Rates and predictors of risk of stroke and its subtypes in diabetes: a prospective observational study
Conclusions Older people with a history of stroke were at highest risk of stroke, but the prognosis and prognostic factors of subtypes were heterogeneous. The results will help clinicians quantify the absolute risk of stroke and its subtypes for typical diabetes patients.

Preadmission Oral Anticoagulant Treatment and Clinical Outcome Among Patients Hospitalized With Acute Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Only a minority of hospitalized patients with acute stroke with atrial fibrillation received OAT at the time of stroke. Preadmission OAT was associated with less severe stroke and lower 30-day mortality rate in a propensity score–matched analysis.

Trends in the incidence of ischaemic stroke in young adults between 1985 and 2011: the Dijon Stroke Registry
Conclusions Multiple factors may account for the increased incidence of ischaemic stroke in people aged <55 years including changes in vascular risk factors, better awareness of the disease and treatment options in the population and among practitioners leading to more frequent referrals for specialised care, and improvements in stroke diagnosis. Stroke prevention must be encouraged even in young adults.

Aspirin for acute stroke of unknown etiology in resource-limited settings: A decision analysis
Conclusion: Aspirin treatment for the period of initial hospitalization after acute stroke of undetermined etiology is predicted to decrease acute stroke-related mortality and in-hospital stroke recurrence even at the highest reported proportion of acute strokes due to ICH. In the absence of clinical trials to test this approach empirically, clinical decisions require patient-specific evaluation of risks and benefits of aspirin in this context.

ICARUSS, the Integrated Care for the Reduction of Secondary Stroke trial: rationale and design of a randomized controlled trial of a multimodal intervention to prevent recurrent stroke in patients with a recent cerebrovascular event, ACTRN = 12611000264987
ConclusionThe ICARUSS study aims to recruit and follow up patients between 2007 and 2013 and demonstrate the effectiveness of exposure to the ICARUSS model in stroke survivors to reduce recurrent stroke or vascular events and promote the implementation of best practice risk factor management at primary care level.

Electronic Stroke CarePath: Integrated Approach to Stroke Care Innovations in Care
We describe the development, implementation, and outcomes of the first 2 years of the Electronic Stroke CarePath, an initiative developed for management of ischemic stroke patients in an effort to improve efficiency and quality of care for patients. The CarePath consists of care pathways for ischemic stroke that are integrated within the electronic health record. Patient-reported outcomes are collected using an external software platform. Documentation tools, order sets, and clinical decision support were designed to improve efficiency, optimize process measure adherence, and produce clinical data as a byproduct of care th...

Performance of bedside stroke recognition tools in discriminating childhood stroke from mimics
Conclusions: Adult stroke recognition tools perform poorly in children and require modification to be useful for pediatric stroke identification. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class II evidence that, for children presenting to the ED with brain attack symptoms, the CPSS and ROSIER tools do not accurately distinguish strokes from mimics.

Particulate Matter and Hospital Admissions for Stroke in Beijing, China: Modification Effects by Ambient Temperature Stroke
Conclusions This study suggests that the associations of PM2.5, PM2.5–10, and PM10 with stroke admissions differed across levels of temperature. Short-term exposure to PM2.5, PM2.5–10, and PM10 was positively associated with hospital admissions for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke on warm days (>13.5°C).

Accuracy of Prediction Instruments for Diagnosing Large Vessel Occlusion in Individuals With Suspected Stroke: A Systematic Review for the 2018 Guidelines for the Early Management of Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke AHA/ASA Systematic Review
Conclusions—No scale predicted LVO with both high sensitivity and high specificity. Systems that use LVO prediction instruments for triage will miss some patients with LVO and milder stroke. More prospective studies are needed to assess the accuracy of LVO prediction instruments in the prehospital setting in all patients with suspected stroke, including patients with hemorrhagic stroke and stroke mimics.
