Predictors of Short-Term Mortality in Patients with Ischemic Stroke
Conclusions: Our study identified a high NIHSS score and large lesion volume as independent risk factors for intrahospital mortality in ischemic stroke patients. Antiplatelet therapy was associated with lower mortality rates. Further studies are needed to explore the potential mechanisms underlying these associations and to develop targeted interventions to improve patient outcomes.PMID:37374346 | PMC:PMC10304635 | DOI:10.3390/medicina59061142

Computed tomography angiography-based radiomics model for predicting carotid atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability
This study aimed to identify radiomic features associated with the neovascularization of CAP and construct a prediction model for CAP vulnerability based on radiomic features. CTA data and clinical data of patients with CAPs who underwent CTA and CEUS between January 2018 and December 2021 in Beijing Hospital were retrospectively collected. The data were divided into a training cohort and a testing cohort using a 7:3 split. According to the examination of CEUS, CAPs were dichotomized into vulnerable and stable groups. 3D Slicer software was used to delineate the region of interest in CTA images, and the Pyradiomics package...

Doppler flow morphology characteristics of epiaortic arteries in aortic valve pathologies: a retrospective study on a cohort of patients with ischemic stroke
ConclusionsWell defined, qualitative Doppler flow characteristics detectable in the CCA and ICA are highly predictive for aortic valve disease. The consideration of these flow characteristics can be useful to streamline diagnostic and therapeutic measures, especially in the outpatient setting.

Association of visceral adiposity index with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis: a population-based study in Shandong, China
CONCLUSIONS: The possible correlation between VAI and aICAS was found to be positive for the first time among Chinese rural residents over 40 years old. A higher VAI was found to be significantly associated with aICAS among the participants who were underweight or normal weight, and these results may provide additional risk stratification information for aICAS.PMID:37198613 | DOI:10.1186/s12944-023-01831-1

Comparing ultrasonographically assessed carotid and abdominal aorta plaques in cardiovascular disease risk estimation
CONCLUSIONS: Both carotid and abdominal aorta plaques are significant risk factors for CV events, but only carotid plaques provide prognostic information beyond traditional CV risk factors on fatal CV events. If one ultrasound parameter for plaque detection and CV risk estimation had to be chosen, carotid plaques may be preferred over abdominal aorta.PMID:37161438 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-023-03264-1

Left ventricular thrombus in a patient with recurrent ischemic stroke events —The role of echocardiography
We present a patient with an ischemic stroke, and the cardiac ultrasound revealed a reduced ejection fraction and the presence of LV thrombus at the apex. The patient had no prior history of cardiovascular diseases. Even in a resource-limited setting, cardiac ultrasound is recommended to investigate stroke or transient ischemic attack events, especially in patients with a prior history of myocardial infarction. Although patients with LV thrombus should be treated with oral anticoagulants for at least 3  months, the role of direct oral anticoagulants and the optimal period of anticoagulation in this setting needs further investigation.

What Are the Classifications of Perinatal Stroke?
Discussion Perinatal stroke occurs in about 1:1000 live births and is a “focal vascular injury from the fetal period to 28 days postnatal age.” Perinatal stroke is the most common cause of hemiparetic cerebral palsy and causes other significant morbidity including cognitive deficits, learning disabilities, motor problems, sensory problems including visual and hearing disorders, epilepsy, and behavioral and psychological problems. Family members are also affected because of the potential anxiety and guilt feelings that having a child with a stroke presents, along with the care that may be needed over the child&#...

The Value of Multimodal Ultrasonic Scoring System in the Diagnosis of Carotid Vulnerable Plaque: A Comparative Study with Pathology
CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound scoring system may be used as an effective method to evaluate the vulnerability of plaque. The diagnostic efficiency of PV-USS2D+CEUS is more higher than PV-USS2D .PMID:37087753 | DOI:10.1002/jum.16238

Deep convolution neural network for screening carotid calcification in dental panoramic radiographs
PLOS Digit Health. 2023 Apr 12;2(4):e0000081. doi: 10.1371/journal.pdig.0000081. eCollection 2023 Apr.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke, a leading global cause of death and disability, is commonly caused by carotid arteries atherosclerosis. Carotid artery calcification (CAC) is a well-known marker of atherosclerosis. Such calcifications are classically detected by ultrasound screening. In recent years it was shown that these calcifications can also be inferred from routine panoramic dental radiographs. In this work, we focused on panoramic dental radiographs taken from 500 patients, manually labelling each of the patients' sides (ea...

Pearls and Pitfalls of Carotid Artery Imaging: Ultrasound, Computed Tomography Angiography, and MR Imaging
Radiol Clin North Am. 2023 May;61(3):405-413. doi: 10.1016/j.rcl.2023.01.001. Epub 2023 Feb 9.ABSTRACTStroke represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide with carotid atherosclerosis responsible for a large proportion of ischemic strokes. Given the high burden of the disease , early diagnosis and optimal secondary prevention are essential elements in clinical practice. For a long time, the degree of stenosis had been considered the parameter to judge the severity of carotid atherosclerosis. Over the last 30 years, literature has shifted attention from stenosis to structural characteristics of atherosclerot...
