Protection against COVID-19 hospitalisation conferred by primary-series vaccination with AZD1222 in non-boosted individuals: first vaccine effectiveness results of the European COVIDRIVE study and meta-regression analysis
We report a prespecified interim analysis of primary-series AZD1222 (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) VE.METHODS: Seven Study Contributors in Europe collected data on individuals aged ≥18 years who were hospitalised with severe acute respiratory infection (June 1st, 2021-September 5th, 2022) and eligible for COVID-19 vaccination prior to hospitalisation. In this test-negative case-control study, individuals were defined as test-positive cases or test-negative controls (SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR) and were either fully vaccinated (two AZD1222 doses, 4-12 weeks apart, completed ≥14 days prior to symptom onset; no booster doses) or unvaccinated (...

Long-running ProMED email service for alerting world to disease outbreaks is in trouble
The first news about the COVID-19 pandemic came not from a government or a scientific publication, but in an email from a disease-alert system called ProMED . This fateful missive in December 2019 about a few cases of a mysterious pneumonia in Wuhan, China, is just one example of how physicians and public health experts around the world have used the 30-year-old, free service to share real-time information about local disease outbreaks with tens of thousands of subscribers. But ProMED is now on life support. Much of its work came to a screeching halt yesterday when 21 of its 38 paid editors and moderators went o...

Adapting the Evidence Academy model for virtual stakeholder engagement in a national setting during the COVID-19 pandemic
J Clin Transl Sci. 2023 Mar 20;7(1):e98. doi: 10.1017/cts.2023.37. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic raised the importance of adaptive capacity and preparedness when engaging historically marginalized populations in research and practice. The Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics in Underserved Populations' COVID-19 Equity Evidence Academy Series (RADx-UP EA) is a virtual, national, interactive conference model designed to support and engage community-academic partnerships in a collaborative effort to improve practices that overcome disparities in SARS-CoV-2 testing and testing technologies. The RADx-UP EA promote...

Building of Pediatric COVID-19 Module Clinic: A Novel Operation Model in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic
We describe the utilization of the first prototype children's modular clinic in Korea University Anam Hospital functioning as the COVID-19 PMC. Between August 1 and September 30, 2022, a total of 766 children visited COVID-19 PMC. Daily number of patient visits to the COVID-19 PMC ranged between 10 and 47 in August; and less than 13 patients per day in September 2022. Not only the model provided timely care for the COVID-19 pediatric patients, but it also enabled safe and efficacious care for the non-COVID-19 patients in the main hospital building while minimizing exposure risk to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavi...

Monitoring the safety of drugs and COVID-19 vaccines by the French Pharmacovigilance Centers during the pandemic: A win-win bet with Health Authorities!
Therapie. 2023 Mar 7:S0040-5957(23)00050-1. doi: 10.1016/j.therap.2023.03.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) pandemic virus was a "health crisis" and a significant burden also for the French pharmacovigilance system. It took its toll in 2 phases, the first being in early 2020 when very little was known, and during which the missions of the 31 Regional Pharmacovigilance Centers (RPVCs) from university hospitals were to detect adverse reactions of drugs used in the context of the disease. Whether as a possible aggravating role on COVID-19, or displaying a differ...

Monitoring the safety of drugs and COVID-19 vaccines by the French Pharmacovigilance Centers during the pandemic: a win-win bet with Health Authorities!
Therapie. 2023 Feb 22:S0040-5957(23)00046-X. doi: 10.1016/j.therap.2023.02.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe pandemic subsequent to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus resulted, for the French institutional pharmacovigilance, in a "health crisis" in 2 phases: the coronavirus disease 2019 - "COVID-19" phase during which the missions of the Regional Pharmacovigilance Centres (RPVC) were to detect a possible impact of drugs on this disease, as whether existed a possible aggravating role of certain drugs, or the safety profile of drugs used for the management of COVID-19 could evolve. Leveraging CTSA hubs for rapid, large-scale, high-impact research: A case study during a global public health emergency
J Clin Transl Sci. 2022 Oct 18;7(1):e13. doi: 10.1017/cts.2022.484. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTAs the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the USA in early 2020, it became clear that knowledge of the prevalence of antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among asymptomatic individuals could inform public health policy decisions and provide insight into the impact of the infection on vulnerable populations. Two Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Hubs and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) set forth to conduct a national seroprevalence survey to assess the infection's rate of sprea...
