Factors That Enhance and Hinder the Retention and Transfer of Online Pre-Clinical Skills Training to Facilitate Blended Learning
CONCLUSION: Blended clinical skills learning that included the flipped classroom concept was well-accepted. Virtual patients proved a convenient cognitive preparation tool for skills training and potentially optimized teaching delivery. The study found that the adapted teaching frameworks incorporating an online clinical skills component into a modified onsite curriculum augmented learners' ability to transfer knowledge to the clinical skills laboratory. An integrated five-step blended model is proposed for future interventions.PMID:37645657 | PMC:PMC10461612 | DOI:10.2147/AMEP.S398376

High SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in Lagos, Nigeria with robust antibody and cellular immune responses
CONCLUSIONS: These results have important implications for understanding the paradoxically high SARS-CoV-2 infection with low mortality rate in Africa and supports the need to better understand the implications of SARS-CoV-2 cellular immunity.PMID:37388808 | PMC:PMC10289822 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcvp.2023.100156

SARS-CoV-2 incidence among teaching staff in primary and secondary schools-Wales, 2020-2021
CONCLUSION: The data were consistent with an elevated risk of COVID-19 amongst younger teaching staff in primary schools when compared to the general population, however differences in case ascertainment couldn't be excluded as a possible reason for this. Rate differences by age group in teaching staff mirrored those in the general population. The risk in older teachers (≥ 50 years) in both settings was the same or lower than in the general population. Amongst all age groups of teachers maintaining the key risk mitigations within periods of COVID transmission remain important.PMID:37208632 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-023-15680-1

Influence of epidemiological and clinical factors in the reactogenicity to Comirnaty ® vaccine in health care workers of a Spanish university teaching hospital (COVIVAC study)
CONCLUSIONS: Systemic adverse effects were more frequent after the second dose of Comirnaty. Previous SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with systemic effects after the first dose. Age, female sex, previous COVID-19, previous isolation due to COVID-19 contact, and CCI showed to be independent predictors of the degree of functional limitation after the 1st dose of Comirnaty®. After the 2nd dose, the degree of functional limitation was lower in those who previously had SARS-CoV-2 infection.PMID:37119130 | DOI:10.37201/req/017.2023

Doubling Down on Best Practices: Reflecting on Teaching Physiology During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Adv Physiol Educ. 2023 Apr 20. doi: 10.1152/advan.00015.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs we pass the third anniversary of the World Health Organization's declaration of the SARS-CoV-2 global pandemic it is beneficial to reflect upon how physiology education adapted to the challenges of the pandemic. At the initial stages of the pandemic, many educators were faced with the challenge of quickly transitioning to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT), requiring shifts in teaching methodology and laboratory structure to adapt to the pandemic normal. In this paper, we provide a broad overview of the efforts made by the community...
