Error traps in the perioperative management of children with type 1 diabetes
This article reviews common errors of associated with the perioperative management of patients with T1D, including failure to assess and coordinate patient care preoperatively; failure to understand diabetes management and technology; failure to monitor blood glucose and recognize dysglycemia; and failure to appropriately administer basal insulin.PMID:37724489 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14763

Use of pre-operative hemoglobin a1c to predict early post-operative renal failure and infection risks in patients who are not diabetics and undergoing elective off pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery
CONCLUSION: In patients without diabetes, a plasma HbA1c ≥6% was a significant independent predictor for early postoperative renal failure.PMID:37706380 | PMC:PMC10284492 | DOI:10.4103/aca.aca_46_22

Trends in the use for labor analgesia in twin pregnancies: A nationwide register-based analysis in Finland
CONCLUSIONS: The main finding of this study was that women with twin pregnancies had a higher rate of epidural analgesia than women with singleton pregnancies. The results of this study should be acknowledged by midwives, obstetricians, and anesthesiologists to provide optimal pain relief for mothers with twin pregnancies and encourage researchers to further research on this topic.PMID:37700887 | PMC:PMC10494306 | DOI:10.1016/j.eurox.2023.100232

Risk factors for the occurrence of infection in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma after restorative reconstruction and its impact on recurrence and quality of life: a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of postoperative infection after restorative and reconstructive surgery for OSCC deserves the attention of clinicians. For high-risk infected persons, relevant anti-infection measures should be taken early against the infectious source, and the possibility of nosocomial infection should be attached great importance in clinical work. After discharge, patients should also actively do follow-up, education and other related work to reduce the incidence of postoperative infection.PMID:37701120 | PMC:PMC10493792 | DOI:10.21037/tcr-23-1150

Spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity is attenuated in male UCD-type 2 diabetes mellitus rats: A link between metabolic and autonomic dysfunction
This study aimed to investigate the role of visceral fat and adiponectin, the most abundant cytokine produced by adipocytes, on baroreflex dysfunction in T2DM rats. Experiments were performed in adult male UCD-T2DM rats assigned to the following experimental groups (n = 6 in each): prediabetic (Pre), diabetes-onset (T0), 4 weeks after onset (T4), and 12 weeks after onset (T12). Age-matched healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were used as controls. Rats were anesthetized and blood pressure was directly measured on a beat-to-beat basis to assess spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) using the sequence technique. Dual-energy X-ray...

Topical anesthesia versus topical and subconjunctival anesthesia combined in diabetic retinopathy photocoagulation
CONCLUSION: Using combined anesthesia in patients subjected to PRP appeared to reduce pain perception limiting the treatment duration and the interruptions for pain without significant complications. Further studies on a larger scale would be desirable to replicate such findings and standardize the analgesic procedures in ophthalmology.PMID:37654069 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231199206
