Endoglin Deficiency Impairs Stroke Recovery Basic Sciences
Conclusions— Endoglin deficiency impairs brain injury recovery. Reduced angiogenesis, impaired macrophage homing, and delayed inflammation resolution could be the underlying mechanism.

A Serious Diagnosis Lacking Common Symptoms
BY JENNIFER TUONG; IVAN KHARCHENKO; JEAN LUC AGARD; & AHMED RAZIUDDIN, MDA 65-year-old man who had HIV well-controlled with highly active antiretroviral therapy, hypertension, sciatica, and restless leg syndrome presented to the emergency department with left leg pain. He also had had chemotherapy and radiation for anal cancer. The patient said the pain had started 45 minutes earlier when he was sitting on the toilet. He described the pain as sore in quality and 10/10 on the pain scale. He reported that it had started in his lower back and radiated to his left leg. He said he had had no trauma or weakness to the regi...

Evaluation of Prescribing Practices and Outcomes Using Direct-Acting Oral Anticoagulants After Cardiac Surgery
Clin Ther. 2021 May 30:S0149-2918(21)00203-4. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2021.04.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Cardiac surgery patients frequently require anticoagulation. Warfarin remains the preferred agent, and a few trials have reported negative outcomes with the use of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in these patients. Therefore, limited literature exists that supports the dosing, safety, and efficacy of DOACs within the cardiac surgery population.METHODS: This single-center, retrospective analysis was conducted at a tertiary academic medical center. All data were extrapolated from electronic med...

254 * evaluation of the downstream aorta after frozen elephant trunk repair for aortic dissections in terms of diameter and false lumen status
Conclusion: Compared to conventional surgery for extensive aortic dissections, the FET technique provides a high rate of FL thrombosis of the thoracic aorta without increasing the risk of the operation.

Role of heparin and non heparin binding serpins in coagulation and angiogenesis: A complex interplay.
Abstract Pro-coagulant, anti-coagulant and fibrinolytic pathways are responsible for maintaining haemostatic balance under physiological conditions. Any deviation from these pathways would result in hypercoagulability leading to life threatening diseases like myocardial infarction, stroke, portal vein thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Angiogenesis is the process of sprouting of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones and plays a critical role in vascular repair, diabetic retinopathy, chronic inflammation and cancer progression. Serpins; a superfamily of protease inhibitors, play ...

Deriving literature-based benchmarks for surgical complications in high-income countries: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study of secondary data does not require ethics approval. It will be presented internationally and published in the peer-reviewed literature. Results will inform a future quality improvement tool and provide benchmarks of surgical complication rates within HICs. Trial registration International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). Registration number CRD42016037519.

Incidence and in-hospital Safety Outcomes of Patients undergoing Percutaneous Mitral Valve Edge-to-Edge Repair Using MitraClip ® - 5 year German national patient sample including 13,575 implants.
CONCLUSIONS: MitraClip® implantations increased markedly 5.4-fold between 2011 and 2015, with a constant in-hospital mortality and MACCE rate. Our data indicate that edge-to-edge mitral valve repair in MitraClip® technique has acceptable in-hospital safety outcomes in a real world scenario. PMID: 30666965 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Determinants of long-term outcome of repaired pulmonary valve stenosis
ConclusionsGood long-term outcome can be expected after PVS repair, but complications and the need for reintervention may appear. Older age and the presence of cyanosis at PVS repair emerged as predictors of cardiovascular complications and identified a population that may merit stricter control.

Cannabis Use Disorder and Perioperative Outcomes in Major Elective Surgeries A Retrospective Cohort Analysis
Conclusions An active cannabis use disorder is associated with an increased perioperative risk of myocardial infarction.Editor ’s PerspectiveWhat We Already Know about This TopicCannabis is known to have cardiovascular and psychoactive effectsThe association between active cannabis use disorder and postoperative outcomes remains unclearWhat This Article Tells Us That Is NewIn the United States, administrative data demonstrate that cannabis use disorder has increased in prevalence from 2010 to 2015Active cannabis use disorder is not associated with a change in overall perioperative morbidity, mortality, length of stay, or...

Anticoagulation following mitral valve repair
ConclusionsOur analysis showed that postoperative warfarin use was associated with an overall reduced composite of bleeding and thromboembolic incidents and superior long ‐term survival. These findings suggest that anticoagulation with warfarin following mitral valve repair may be a safe and effective means for avoiding postoperative complications and that a large prospective randomized clinical trial is warranted.

Extent of mural thrombus is not associated with increased 5-year mortality following elective AAA repair
CONCLUSIONS: In our experience, the extent of mural thrombus in AAA does not influence long-term survival after elective repair. AAA repair may provide protection against circulating components of mural thrombus which have the potential to promote atherosclerotic-related adverse events. Patients with renal insufficiency and larger AAA have increased risk of mortality 5 years after elective repair.PMID:35331063 | DOI:10.1177/17085381211063282
