Lived experiences of chronic cognitive and mood symptoms among community-dwelling adults following stroke: a mixed-methods analysis.
CONCLUSION: Stroke survivors experienced cognitive and mood-related symptoms beyond one-year post stroke, which has implications for long-term assessment and management. Incorporation of continued symptom monitoring into existing community-based services is needed to address chronic cognitive and mood symptoms affecting the quality of life of persons with stroke. Associations of white matter hyperintensities with poststroke depression: A 1 ‐year longitudinal study
ConclusionThe association between WMH and PSD varies according to type of WMH, and time after stroke, such that early depressive symptoms are associated with PVWMHs, and delayed severe depression is associated with DWMHs.

Atrial fibrillation independently linked with depression in community-dwelling older population. Results from the nationwide PolSenior project.
CONCLUSIONS: In community-dwelling geriatric Polish population AF is associated with higher prevalence of depression. This association is independent from the demographic factors, disabilities and comorbidities (including history of stroke). PMID: 30219348 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prevalence of Chronic Cancer and No-Cancer Pain in Elderly Hospitalized Patients: Elements for the Early Assessment of Palliative Care Needs
ConclusionPain is a critical underestimated problem in elderly patients. A timely systematic evaluation of the pain would call attention to palliative care needs and reduce the negative effects of uncontrolled pain on the quality of life.

The association between relevant comorbidities and dementia in patients with atrial fibrillation
AbstractRisk of dementia is increased in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to  study associations between relevant comorbidities and prevalent as well as incident dementia in AF patients. Study population included all adults (n = 12,283) ≥ 45 years diagnosed with AF at 75 primary care centers in Sweden 2001–2007. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for associations between comorbidities and prevalent dementia. In a subsample (n = 12,096), (excluding patients with dementia diagnosed before AF onset), Cox regression was used to esti...

Aging related functional and structural changes in the heart and aorta: MitoTEMPO improves aged-cardiovascular performance.
Abstract Aging in humans represents declining in cardio-protective systems, however its mechanisms are not known yet. We aimed to analyse how aging affects key mechanisms responsible for contractile dysfunction via comparing the improperly synchrony between electrical and mechanical activities in male aged-rats (24-month old) comparison to those of adult-rats (6-month old). We determined significantly increased systemic oxidative stress with decreased antioxidant capacity, clear insulin resistance and hypertrophy in aged-rats with normal fasting blood glucose. We also determined significantly high level of reactiv...

Reduced mortality rates among caregivers: Does family caregiving provide a stress-buffering effect?
This study tests a possible mechanism for the mortality effect by applying a theoretical model that posits psychological and physiological stress-buffering benefits from prosocial helping behaviors. Participants in the population-based REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study included 3,580 family caregivers who were individually matched to 3,580 noncaregivers on 15 demographic, health history, and health behavior variables using a propensity score matching algorithm. Baseline measures of depressive symptoms and perceived stress levels were also collected. The results indicated that caregiver...

Falls in Mexican older adults aged 60  years and older.
This study included 6247 participants and their spouse or partner aged 60 years and older from the Mexican Health and Aging Study, an ongoing longitudinal study (2001-2012) conducted in Mexico. Measures included socio-demographics, falls, physical activity, comorbid conditions, pain, vertigo, vision and hearing impairments, urinary incontinence, lower extremity functional limitation, activities of daily living (ADLs), cognitive function, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Mean age was 69.6 years (standard error = 0.18) and 51.8% were female. Forty percent reported one or more falls at baseline. Older age, being f...

Depression in type 1 diabetes and risk of dementia.
CONCLUSIONS: For people with T1D, depression significantly increases dementia risk. Given the pervasiveness of depression in T1D, this has major implications for successful aging in this population recently living to old age. PMID: 29634288 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Related factors of cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults in Beijing Longitudinal Study of Aging.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of cognitive impairment among the older adults in Beijing was high. More attention should be paid to the identification of and intervention for factors influencing cognitive impairment, and health education should be carried out to improve the quality of life of the older adults. Subjective Social Status Predicts Late-Life Memory Trajectories through Both Mental and Physical Health Pathways
Conclusion: Results provide preliminary behavioral evidence for the deleterious effects of social stress on cognitive aging. These results may help inform the development of policies and interventions to reduce cognitive morbidity among older adults who perceive a low position on the social hierarchy.Gerontology
