Association of the ankle-brachial index with history of myocardial infarction and stroke
Background: Ankle-brachial index (ABI) testing is a simple, noninvasive method to diagnose peripheral artery disease (PAD) and is associated with all-cause mortality. The association of ABI levels and myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke is less certain. We sought to further characterize the association between ABI levels and history of MI and stroke. Methods: Using data from the Life Line Screening program, 3.6 million self-referred participants from 2003 to 2008 completed a medical questionnaire and had bilateral ABIs performed. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between ABI cutoff points (ABI 1.40)...

Postoperative Blood Urea Nitrogen Is Associated With Stroke in Cardiac Surgical Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: In these analyses, we identified BUN as a marker of heightened postoperative stroke risk after cardiac surgical procedures. Postoperative risk markers may improve assessment of delayed postoperative strokes. PMID: 25683323 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of blood lipids, atherosclerosis and statin use with dementia and cognitive impairment after stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: Atherosclerosis may be associated with an increased risk of post-stroke dementia. Post-stroke statin use was associated with decreased risk of cognitive impairment. To confirm whether or not statins confer advantages in the post-stroke population in terms of preventing cognitive decline over and above their known effectiveness in reducing risk of further vascular events, further stroke trials including cognitive assessment and observational analyses adjusted for key confounders, focusing on key subgroups or statin use patterns are required. A medical history of arterial thrombosis is a strong predictor of post-operative myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with hip fractures —a nationwide cohort study
ConclusionMI and stroke after hip fractures are overlooked and serious complications. Persons with elevated risk can be identified at admission, based on their medical history.

Outcomes of stroke events during transcatheter aortic valve implantation
CONCLUSIONS: Among Medicare beneficiaries undergoing TAVI, procedure-related ischaemic stroke was associated with worse outcomes, increased Medicare expenditures, and less time spent at home. Procedure-related ischaemic stroke during TAVI remains a critically important and potentially preventable source of patient mortality, morbidity and healthcare utilisation.PMID:35135749 | DOI:10.4244/EIJ-D-21-00951

Development and validation of nomograms for predicting stroke recurrence after firstepisode ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: Age, mRS score and peripheral vascular disease are the factors affecting stroke recurrence in first-episode ischemic stroke survivors, and the nomogram has a high discrimination and predictive power for predicting ischemic stroke recurrence.PMID:35249880 | DOI:10.12122/j.issn.1673-4254.2022.01.16
