Ischemic stroke and vascular risk factors in young and older adults. Community-based retrospective study (2011-2020)
CONCLUSIONS: The results reinforce the need for continuity of care and follow-up in people with acute stroke in primary care and the need to improve the quality of registries.PMID:37086593 | DOI:10.1016/j.aprim.2023.102623

The Racial Gap in U.S. Stroke Deaths Got Worse During the Pandemic
NEW YORK — The longstanding racial gap in U.S. stroke death rates widened dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, government researchers said Thursday. Stroke death rates increased for both Black and white adults in 2020 and 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. But the difference between the two groups grew about 22%, compared with the five years before the pandemic. “Any health inequity that existed before seems to have been made larger during the pandemic,” said Dr. Bart Demaerschalk, a stroke researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix who was not involved in the new...

People with severe obesity and a genetic pathway variant have increased risk of hypertension, Mayo Clinic research finds
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Obesity and its associated cardiometabolic issues are a major health concern in the U.S. and internationally. According to a study published in 2017, 12% of the world's adult population was affected by obesity in 2016, double the percentage from 30 years earlier. With obesity comes an increasing risk of cardiovascular disease, including stroke, congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction. Fortunately, obesity is a multifactorial disease that results from an energy balance dysregulation…

Exploring the molecular underpinning of psoriasis and its associated comorbidities through network approach: cross talks of genes and pathways
3 Biotech. 2023 May;13(5):130. doi: 10.1007/s13205-023-03533-y. Epub 2023 Apr 13.ABSTRACTPatients with psoriasis often complain of several linked disorders including autoimmune and cardiometabolic diseases. Understanding of molecular link between psoriasis and associated comorbidities would be of great interest at the point of patient care management. Integrative unbiased network approach, indicates significant unidirectional gene overlap between psoriasis and its associated comorbid condition including obesity (31 upregulated and 26 downregulated), ischemic stroke (14 upregulated and 2 downregulated), dyslipidaemia (5 upr...

Impact of multimorbidity on mortality in HFrEF: Which comorbidities matter most? – An analysis of PARADIGM‐HF and ATMOSPHERE
ConclusionsIn HF, the impact of multimorbidity differed at the individual-patient and population level, depending on the prevalence of and the risk related to each comorbidity, and the interaction between individual comorbidities. Patients with co-existent PAD and stroke were at greatest individual risk whereas, from a population perspective, co-existent CKD and hypertension mattered mostThis article is protected by copyright. Association of body mass index and waist-to-height ratio with outcomes in ischemic stroke: results from the Third China National Stroke Registry
Conflicting reports of obesity paradox have led to confusion about weight management strategies for post-stroke patients. The main purpose of this study is to determine whether the obesity paradox measured by ...

Inflammation May Be the Culprit Behind Our Deadliest Diseases
In the early days of my medical residency, I met a man whom we’ll call Jason. He arrived to our emergency room on a holiday, nonchalant yet amiable, and complained of mild chest pain. Jason was tall and trim, with a strong South Boston accent and fingertips still faintly stained from his last home-improvement project. He was only 45 years old, but he looked much younger. He didn’t smoke, barely drank alcohol, and his cholesterol levels had always been normal. No one in his family had a history of heart disease. He asked us if we could work quickly—he wanted to be home for dinner with his daughters. [time-...

Controlling hypothalamic DNA methylation at the Pomc promoter does not regulate weight gain during the development of obesity
by Taylor McFadden, Natasha Gaito, Isabella Carucci, Everett Fletchall, Kayla Farrell, Timothy J. Jarome Obesity is a complex medical condition that is linked to various health complications such as infertility, stroke, and osteoarthritis. Understanding the neurobiology of obesity is crucial for responding to the etiology of this disease. The hypothalamus coordinates many integral activities such as hormone regulation and feed intake and numerous studies have observed altered hypothalamic gene regulation in obesity models. Previously, it was reported that the promoter region of the satiety gene,Pomc, has increased DNA met...

Gut microbiome plays a vital role in post-stroke injury repair by mediating neuroinflammation
In this study, we reviewed the role of the gut microbiome in cerebral stroke and the underlying mechanism of the AMPK signaling pathway in stroke. AMPK mediators in nerve repair and the regulation of intestinal microbial balance were also summarized.PMID:37031605 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110126
