Chronic Kidney Disease Increases Cerebral Microbleeds in Mouse and Man
We examined the interaction between CKD and brain microhemorrhages (the neuropathological substrate of microbleeds) in mouse and cell culture models and studied progression of microbleed burden on serial brain imaging from humans.Mouse studies: Two CKD models were investigated: adenine-induced tubulointerstitial nephritis and surgical 5/6 nephrectomy.Cell culture studies: bEnd.3 mouse brain endothelial cells were grown to confluence, and monolayer integrity was measured after exposure to 5 –15% human uremic serum or increasing concentrations of urea.Human studies: Progression of brain microbleeds was evaluated on serial ...

Time-series Analysis of Heat Waves and Emergency Department Visits in Atlanta, 1993 to 2012
Conclusions:
Heat waves can confer additional risks of ED visits beyond those of daily air temperature, even in a region with high air-conditioning prevalence. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP44

Neurological Involvement in Primary Systemic Vasculitis
Conclusion
Neurological involvement is a common complication of PSV (Table 1), and neurologists play an important role in the identification and diagnosis of PSV patients with otherwise unexplained neurological symptoms as their chief complaint. This article summarizes the neurological manifestations of PSV and hopes to improve neuroscientists' understanding of this broad range of diseases.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome: an acute manifestation of systemic lupus erythematous.
Abstract
Stroke mimickers are common, and they represent a diagnostic dilemma for clinicians. Many, like posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), are easily reversible. The manifestation of PRES is characterised by headaches, convulsions, altered mental functioning and blindness. In most cases, computed tomography of the brain will show hypodense lesions in the parieto-occpitial lobe, which only further confounds the physician. Although this syndrome is uncommon, prompt and accurate recognition allows early treatment, which has been shown to produce favourable outcomes. Herein, we report the case of a ...

Short term outcomes of COVID-19 in lupus: Propensity score matched analysis from a nationwide multi-centric research network
CONCLUSION: The mortality of individuals with SLE due to COVID-19 is comparable to the general population but with higher risks of hospitalisation, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, stroke, VTE and sepsis. The presence of nephritis increases the risk of AKI, thus probably increasing hospitalisation and sepsis.PMID:34649723 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaut.2021.102730
