RPS assessment of research into effects of lycopene on the risk of heart attack, stroke and cancer
Source: Royal Pharmaceutical Society Area: News The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has featured a report on a small study in which scientists claim a single pill which contains a chemical found in tomato skin (lycopene) could cut the risk of heart attacks, stroke and even slow down the development of cancer.   The two-month study looked at 36 patients with pre-existing heart disease, who were already taking cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, and 36 healthy volunteers. Tests showed that the natural remedy boosts the elasticity and efficiency of blood vessels; in turn this reduces the hardening of the arteries which ...

Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the development of coronary heart disease and stroke subtypes in a general Japanese population: The Hisayama Study
Abstract: Background and purpose: It has not been fully determined whether non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDLC) levels are involved in vascular events, especially stroke, in general Asian populations. We evaluated the association between non-HDLC levels and the risk of type-specific cardiovascular disease in a prospective cohort study in Japan. Methods: A total of 2452 community-dwelling Japanese subjects aged ≥40 years were followed prospectively for 24 years. Results: The age- and sex-adjusted incidence of coronary heart diseases (CHD) significantly increased with elevating non-HDLC levels (P for trend

Stroke Rounds: Pharms Help Manage BP, LDL (CME/CE)
(MedPage Today) -- For patients recovering after a minor stroke, pharmacist-led management of blood pressure and cholesterol levels was better than nurse-led management, although both resulted in substantial improvements in control, a randomized trial showed.

HDL-3 is a Superior Predictor of Carotid Artery Disease in a Case-Control Cohort of 1725 Participants Stroke
Conclusions This study is the first to contrast the associations of HDL-2 and HDL-3 with CAAD. We found that HDL-3 levels were more predictive of CAAD status than HDL-2, HDL-C, or apolipoprotein A1. In addition, for men, paraoxonase 1 activity improved the overall model prediction for CAAD independently and additively with HDL-3 levels. Further investigation into the molecular mechanisms through which HDL-3 is associated with protection from CAAD is warranted.

Management of Vascular Risk Factors in the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy Versus Stenting Trial (CREST) Stroke
Conclusions Site-based risk-factor control improved significantly in the first 6 months and over the long term in CREST but was often suboptimal. Intensive medical management should be considered for future trials of carotid revascularization. Clinical Trial Registration URL: ClinicalTrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00004732.

Statins decrease the risk of stroke in individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is undoubtedly associated with premature coronary heart disease, but it is debatable whether FH increases the risk for stroke.

Effects of functional genetic variants in PPARδ encoding peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta on the risk of ischemic stroke in Chinese Han population
Ischemic stroke (IS), a common neurological disease with a variety of causes which is manifested as atherosclerosis or gradual cholesterol deposition, has become a leading cause of death and a major cause of permanent disability in many developed and developing countries. Chronic low-grade inflammation and activation of the innate immune system are closely involved in the pathogenesis of IS [1–2]. Mounting evidences from in vivo and ex vivo studies showed that inflammatory cytokines markers play a vital role in the development of IS [3].

ABCA1-Mediated Cholesterol Efflux Capacity to Cerebrospinal Fluid Is Reduced in Patients With Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease Stroke
Conclusions In people with MCI and AD, the capacity of CSF to facilitate ABCA1-mediated cholesterol efflux is impaired. This lesser cholesterol efflux in MCI supports a pathophysiological role for ABCA1-mediated cholesterol transport in early neurodegeneration.

Role of functional polymorphisms of the IL-10 gene promoter in the risk of ischemic stroke in Chinese Uyghur population: One case-control study
Ischemic stroke (IS), a common multifactor neurological disease with a variety of etiologies affected by a number of genetic mutations and environmental factors, is manifested by atherosclerosis or gradual cholesterol deposition. Chronic low-grade inflammation and activation of the innate immune system are closely involved in the pathogenesis of IS [1–2]. Cross-sectional studies have provided support for the hypothesis that chronic subclinical inflammation may be associated with atherosclerosis and precede the progression of clinically overt IS [3–4].

Concentration of Smaller High-Density Lipoprotein Particle (HDL-P) Is Inversely Correlated With Carotid Intima Media Thickening After Confounder Adjustment: The Multi Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Stroke
Conclusions Small+medium HDL-P is significantly and inversely correlated with cIMT measurements. Correlation of small+medium HDL-P with cardioprotective paraoxonase 1 activity may reflect a functional aspect of HDL responsible for this finding.

Coronary Heart Disease, Peripheral Arterial Disease, and Stroke in Familial Hypercholesterolaemia: Insights From the SAFEHEART Registry (Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Cohort Study).
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of ASCVD is higher, and the involvement of the arterial territories is different in FH patients when compared with their unaffected relatives. Age, male sex, increased body mass index, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, smoking habit, and lipoprotein(a) >50 mg/dL were independently associated to ASCVD.
