HDL cholesterol and stroke risk: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
Accurate identification of risk factors for stroke is important for public health promotion and disease prevention. HDL cholesterol is a potential risk factor, yet its role in stroke risk is unclear, as is whether HDL cholesterol content or particle number might be a better indicator of stroke risk. Furthermore, the degree to which ethnicity moderates the risk is unknown. As such, the current study examines the associations between incident stroke and both HDL cholesterol concentration and particle number, and assesses the moderating role of race and ethnicity.

Development and Validation of Electronic Quality Measures to Assess Care for Patients With Transient Ischemic Attack and Minor Ischemic Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— It is feasible to construct valid eQMs for processes of transient ischemic attack and minor ischemic stroke care. Healthcare systems with EHRs should consider using electronic data to evaluate care for their patients with transient ischemic attack and to complement and expand quality measurement programs currently focused on patients with stroke.

Cholesterol variability and the risk of mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke: a nationwide population-based study
ConclusionHigh variability in lipid levels is associated with adverse health-related outcomes. These findings suggest that lipid variability is an important risk factor in the general population.

Adverse effects of statin therapy: perception vs. the evidence – focus on glucose homeostasis, cognitive, renal and hepatic function, haemorrhagic stroke and cataract
ConclusionLong-term statin treatment is remarkably safe with a low risk of clinically relevant adverse effects as defined above; statin-associated muscle symptoms were discussed in a previous Consensus Statement. Importantly, the established cardiovascular benefits of statin therapy far outweigh the risk of adverse effects.

Association of Small Dense Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol with Stroke Risk, Severity and Prognosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated levels of sdLDL-C were associated with a higher prevalence of AIS, especially in non-cardioembolic stroke subtypes. After adjustment for other risk factors, sdLDL-C was found to be an independent risk factor for AIS. Also, sdLDL-C level was strongly associated with AIS severity and poor functional outcomes. Logistic regression models for AIS risk and prognosis prediction were established to help clinicians provide better prevention for high-risk subjects and monitor their prognosis. Complex Aortic Arch Atherosclerosis in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Even in patients with ischemic stroke with non-valvular AF, concomitant CAPs should be considered in older individuals and those who have diabetes or low HDL-C. PMID: 32908035 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Differences Between Anticoagulated Patients With Ischemic Stroke Versus Intracerebral Hemorrhage
Conclusions In patients presenting with stroke on oral anticoagulant, AIS/TIA was 5 times more common than ICH. A high atherosclerotic burden (indicated by cardiovascular comorbidities and extracranial atherosclerosis) and prior AIS/TIA contributed more to AIS/TIA, while small vessel disease markers and prior ICH were stronger determinants for ICH. Association of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol with Risk of Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke among Middle-Aged Japanese Workers: An Analysis using Inverse Probability Weighting
CONCLUSION: In middle-aged Japanese workers, LDL-C was significantly and positively associated with CHD, but not with ischemic stroke. LDL-C was inversely significantly associated with intracerebral hemorrhage.PMID:35831131 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63519
