A medical history of arterial thrombosis is a strong predictor of post-operative myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with hip fractures —a nationwide cohort study
ConclusionMI and stroke after hip fractures are overlooked and serious complications. Persons with elevated risk can be identified at admission, based on their medical history.

Stroke with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter: a descriptive population-based study from the Brest stroke registry
The objective of the present prospective study, using data from 2008, was to evaluate the prevalence of AA (atrial fibrillation/flutter) in patients with stroke and the impact of implementing AF guidelines. Methods: The prevalence of AA was studied in patients diagnosed with stroke from January 1 to December 31, 2008 in the population-based Stroke Registry of Brest, France (total population, 363,760 according to the 2008 census, with 295,553 aged 15 years or older). Guidelines implementation was assessed in terms of antithrombotic therapy (VKA, antiplatelet agent, none), and the CHADS2 (Congestive heart failure, Hypertens...

Clinical characteristics of atrial fibrillation‐related cardioembolic stroke in patients aged 80 years or older
ConclusionsIn AF‐related cardioembolic stroke, patients aged ≥80 years had different clinical characteristics and poorer outcome compared with patients aged <80 years.

Real ‐World Clinical Characteristics and Treatment Patterns of Individuals Aged 80 and Older with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: Results from the ReAl‐life Multicenter Survey Evaluating Stroke Study
ConclusionNearly one‐fifth of individuals with NVAF in this real‐world sample were aged 80 and older. Participants aged 80 and older were more likely to be female and have more comorbidities than those who were younger than 80. Those aged 80 and older with AF were less likely to receive anticoagulants than those who were younger than 80, but having more comorbidities and other individual‐level characteristics may explain this difference. When they were prescribed OACs, participants aged 80 and older had poorer quality of anticoagulation than those who were younger, suggesting opportunities for improvement.

Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction is associated with cerebral white matter lesions (leukoaraiosis) in elderly patients without ischemic heart disease and stroke
ConclusionsThis investigation identified an association between LV diastolic dysfunction and WML. Further investigations are required to clarify whether there is a direct association between the two diseases. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2014; 14 (Suppl. 2): 71–76.

Use of health and aged care services in Australia following hospital admission for myocardial infarction, stroke or heart failure
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including myocardial infarction (MI), stroke and heart failure (HF) are the leading cause of death amongst the older population worldwide. The aim of this study is to investigate...

Causal effects of cardiovascular risk factors on onset of major age-related diseases: A time-to-event Mendelian randomization study.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results highlight the involvement of BMI in the development of multiple age-related diseases. We found that some observed causal associations can attribute to pleiotropic effects of some genetic variations. These findings have important implications in unraveling causal effects of common risk factors on age-related diseases and guiding effective intervention strategies to reduce the incidence of these diseases. Underuse of Anticoagulation in Older Patients with Atrial Fibrillation and CHADS 2 Score ≥ 2: Are We Doing Better Since the Marketing of Direct Oral Anticoagulants?
ConclusionIn older patients with AF, anticoagulant underuse was mainly associated with antiplatelet use. Anticoagulant underuse and antiplatelet use have both decreased since DOAC marketing. Underuse of anticoagulants was still a concern for three in ten geriatric patients with AF at high risk of stroke (CHADS2 score ≥ 2).

Impact of influenza, herpes zoster, and pneumococcal vaccinations on the incidence of cardiovascular events in subjects aged over 65  years: a systematic review
AbstractThis systematic review aims to summarize the impact of vaccination against influenza, shingles, and pneumococcus on the incidence on the risk of cardiovascular events in the elderly. This protocol was developed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We conducted a literature search and identified all relevant articles published regarding the matter up to September 2022. We retrieved 38 studies (influenza vaccine  = 33, pneumococcal vaccine = 5, and zoster vaccine = 2). A total of 28 and 2 studies have shown that influenza and pneumococcal vaccines significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular disease ...

Circulatory Diseases in the U.S. Elderly in the Linked National Long-Term Care Survey-Medicare Database: Population-Based Analysis of Incidence, Comorbidity, and Disability
Incidence rates of acute coronary heart disease (ACHD; including myocardial infarction and angina pectoris), stroke, and heart failure (HF) were studied for their age, disability, and comorbidity patterns in the U.S. elderly population using the National Long Term Care Survey (NLTCS) data linked to Medicare records for 1991–2005. Incidence rates increased with age with a decrease in the oldest old (stroke and HF) or were stable at all ages (ACHD). For all diseases, incidence rates were lower among institutionalized individuals and higher in individuals with higher comorbidity indices. The results could be used for un...

Depressive symptoms among frail elderly in ordinary living: who is affected and who is treated?
Conclusion: Those elderly with a GDS score indicating a risk for depression have poorer health, are more dependent on help and are more often treated with sedatives. The study could not confirm an association between heart failure or TIA/stroke and risk for depression. PMID: 24708142 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Relationship of Cardiovascular Disease to Physical Functioning in Women Surviving to Age 80 and Above in the Womens Health Initiative
Conclusions: Older women with any CVD, and particularly women with congestive heart failure or peripheral arterial disease, reported significantly lower PF compared to women with no CVD. Regardless of CVD diagnosis, higher PF was strongly associated with a more active lifestyle and lower body mass index, suggesting potential intervention targets for more optimal aging.
