Association of Magnesium Depletion Score with Congestive Heart Failure: Results from the NHANES 2007-2016
This study aimed to explore the association between MDS and congestive heart failure (CHF) among US adults. A total of 19,227 eligible participants from the 2007-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were enrolled in this study and then divided into three groups according to the level of MDS (none to low: MDS=0-1, middle: MDS=2, high: MDS=3-5). Sample-weighted logistic regression models were applied to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) exploring the independent relationship between MDS and CHF. The estimated prevalence of CHF increased with the increasing level of MDS (none to l...

Circulating Magnesium and Risk of Major Adverse Cardiac Events among Patients with Atrial Fibrillation in the ARIC Cohort
Conclusions: Among patients with AF, higher serum Mg was associated with a lower risk of developing incident MI and, to a lesser extent, other CV endpoints. Further studies in larger patients with AF cohorts are needed to evaluate the role of serum Mg in preventing adverse CV outcomes in these patients.PMID:36904210 | DOI:10.3390/nu15051211

Assessing the geochemical processes controlling groundwater quality and their possible effect on human health in Patna, Bihar
This study aims to identify the sources and processes controlling groundwater's hydrochemical evolution in the Patna region's urban area. In this research, we evaluated the interplay between several measures of groundwater quality, the various possible causes of groundwater pollution, and the resulting health risks. Twenty groundwater samples were taken from various locations and examined to determine the water quality. The average EC of the groundwater in the investigated area was 728 ± 331.84 µS/cm, with a range of around 300-1700 µS/cm. Positive loadings were seen for total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conducti...

Pharmacological interventions for preventing atrial fibrillation after lung surgery: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Current clinical evidence supports the effectiveness of pharmacological intervention with beta-blockers, amiodarone, magnesium sulfate, or calcium-channel blockers to reduce the incidence of POAF after lung surgery in patients with lung cancer. In the absence of contraindications, prophylaxis with beta-blockers seems to be the most effective of the treatments studied.PMID:36136141 | DOI:10.1007/s00228-022-03383-2

Comparison of Serum Selenium Levels Between Patients with Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation and Normal Controls
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2022 May 9. doi: 10.1007/s12011-022-03281-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained dysrhythmia in the elderly population. It is estimated to affect more than 30 million people worldwide. AF occurs when abnormal electrical impulses start to activate in the atria and override the heart's natural pacemaker, which can no longer control the heart's rhythm. Since atrial contractility is impaired in AF, blood flow in the atria becomes stasis over time and causes thrombus formation. This thrombus causes the risk of embolism and causes complications such as stroke. ...

The association between abnormal serum magnesium levels and prognosis of elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia
Magnes Res. 2021 Nov 1;34(4):159-165. doi: 10.1684/mrh.2022.0493.ABSTRACTTo investigate the association between abnormal serum magnesium levels and the prognosis of elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 1381 elderly patients with CAP in the First Hospital of Qinhuangdao between January 2015 and December 2018. Serum magnesium concentrations in the range of 0.75-1.25 mmol/L were defined as normal. Patients were assigned into normal, hypomagnesemia, and hypermagnesemia groups. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality, indicating whether a patient died at...
