A rare cause of ischemic stroke: cardiac myxoma. Case report and review of literature.
Authors: Mustafa ER, Tudoraşcu DR, Giucă A, Toader DM, Foarfă MC, Puiu I, Istrate-Ofiţeru AM Abstract A 46-year-old female diagnosed several years ago with arterial hypertension and an ischemic stroke with significant recovery was admitted for dyspnea on usual physical activity and fatigue. Physical examination revealed signs of heart failure with crackles on both lung bases, distented jugular veins, accentuated pulmonic valve closure (P2) and tricuspid regurgitation murmur. Echocardiography identified a large tumor in the left atrium, suggestive of atrial myxoma, which caused a severe functional mitral stenosi...

Hypertension and acute coronary syndromes in Romania: data from the ISACS-TC registry
There is little information on the incidence and prognostic significance of arterial hypertension (HTN) in acute coronary syndromes (ACSs), especially in the east European countries. We sought to investigate a registry of ACS patients in Romania, in order to better elucidate whether hypertensive patients are at higher risk of death and deserve a tailored approach for management and follow-up. The data of this study are a framework of the International Survey of Acute Coronary Syndromes in Transitional Countries (ISACS-TC) (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01218776). The present analysis focused on 2286 retrospective patients admitte...

Clinical Risk Factors for Gastroduodenal Ulcer in Romanian Low-Dose Aspirin Consumers.
Conclusions. Concomitant use of NSAIDs or anticoagulants, comorbidities (cerebrovascular disease), and male gender are the most important independent risk factors for ulcer on endoscopy in low-dose aspirin consumers, in a population with a high prevalence of H. pylori infection. The Patterns of Non-vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) Use in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation in Seven Balkan Countries: a Report from the BALKAN-AF Survey
ConclusionsNOACs are increasingly used in AF patients in the Balkan Region, but NOAC use is predominantly guided by factors other than evidence-based decision-making (e.g., drug availability on the market or reimbursement policy). Efforts are needed to establish an evidence-based approach to OAC selection and to facilitate the optimal use of OAC, thus improving the outcomes in AF patients in this large region.

Hypertensive cardiomyopathy - histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects.
Authors: Braşoveanu AM, Mogoantă L, Mălăescu GD, Predescu OI, Cotoi BV, Ifrim Chen F Abstract Arterial hypertension (AH) represents the main cause of morbidity and mortality all over the world. Approximately 40% of the adults aged over 25 years old and about 90% of the persons aged over 80 years old suffer from AH. It is a multifactorial condition, in whose etiopathogeny there are involved numerous genetic, metabolic and environment factors. In its turn, AH is one of the most important risk factors for heart disease, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease and peripheral vascular diseases. In hypertensive patient...

Acquired angioedema induced by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors - experience of a hospital-based allergy center.
Authors: Mihaela Leru P, Florin Anton V, Bocsan C, Muntean A, Boda D Abstract Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) represent an important group of pharmacological compounds, largely prescribed for more than 30 years. They have been extensively evaluated in clinical trials, demonstrating significant reduction of morbidity and mortality of patients with cardiovascular diseases, mainly high blood pressure, myocardial infarction, heart failure and stroke. Besides their beneficial effects and a general good safety profile, it was proven that ACEIs might also induce adverse effects in some patients, most nota...

Clinical Features and Outcome of Infective Endocarditis in a University Hospital in Romania.
Conclusions: Staphylococcus aureus IE was associated with the presence of large vegetations, prosthetic valve endocarditis and intracardiac abscess. Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) infection was associated with prosthetic valve dysfunction. Streptococcus gallolyticus etiology correlated with ischemic embolic stroke and the presence of large vegetations. Cardiovascular surgery was recommended in 67.4% of patients but was performed only on half of them. In hospital death occurred in 33.7% of patients and independent predictors of mortality were congestive heart failure and septic shock. PMID: 33578787 [PubMed -...
