Filaggrin loss-of-function mutations are associated with food allergy in childhood and adolescence
Filaggrin is an epidermal protein that has a role in skin barrier function. Filaggrin loss-of-function (FLG-LOF) mutations are a significant risk factor for eczema and atopy, but their association with food allergy (FA) is less clear.

Food Allergy in South Africa
This article summarizes some of the recent research and observations regarding food allergy from the South African setting.Recent FindingsSouth Africa has recently seen two important food allergy prevalence studies in selected and unselected populations. Both show allergy rates in keeping with those in several westernized countries. The major difference between sensitization and allergy rates in these studies emphasizes the vital role of the food challenge in differentiating true food allergy from asymptomatic sensitisation in equivocal cases. Eczema, young age and living in an urban population are important risk factors f...

Food Allergy Is an Important Risk Factor for Childhood Asthma, Irrespective of Whether It Resolves
Conclusions Asthma at age 4 years is twice as common in those with challenge-proven food allergy at age 1 year, irrespective of whether the food allergy subsequently resolves. Children with 2 or more food allergies and those with coexistent eczema were almost 3 times as likely to develop asthma compared with those with no food allergies.

Primary Care Provider-Reported Prevalence of Vaccine and Polyethylene-Glycol Allergy in Canada
CONCLUSION: This is the first study to estimate the prevalence of vaccine and PEG allergy in a national cohort that utilizes PCP documentation, demonstrating a low reported rate of vaccine allergy and PEG allergy.PMID:34004274 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2021.05.011

Persistent Food Allergy and Food Allergy Coexistent with Eczema Is Associated with Reduced Growth in the First 4 Years of Life
Conclusions Children with both food allergy and eczema were shorter and lighter throughout early childhood, with more pronounced differences in those with persistent food allergy.

Factors Associated with Development of Food Allergy in Young Children after Liver Transplantation: A Retrospective Analysis of 10  Years' Experience
Conclusions We identified eczema at liver transplantation as a significant risk factor for the development of IgE-mediated food allergy after liver transplantation, but not non–IgE-mediated food allergy. Our findings may contribute to a better understanding of the susceptible subgroup requiring special caution and to the establishment of effective strategies for prevention.

Risk Factors for Hen’s Egg Allergy in Europe: EuroPrevall birth cohort
ConclusionsSimilar to peanut allergy, eczema was strongly associated with egg allergy development and the association increased with increasing eczema severity. The age of introduction of dietary egg was not a risk factor. The potential role of antibiotics in early life as a risk factor for egg allergy needs further examination.

What affects quality of life among caregivers of food-allergic children?
CONCLUSION: Food allergen, having multiple food allergies, age at reaction, income, eczema, parent-reported anaphylaxis, and reaction perception can significantly affect caregiver food allergy QoL. Milk or egg allergy was associated with worse total and domain-specific caregiver QoL scores vs peanut or tree nut allergy, representing a high-risk subgroup. PMID: 24950845 [PubMed - in process]

Food allergy in south african children with atopic dermatitis
ConclusionThe prevalence of food allergy is unexpectedly high in South African children with AD, and comparable with food allergy rates in AD patients in developed countries. There are ethnic differences, with significantly lower peanut allergy rates in Blacks compared to mixed race patients. These results are not generalizable to an unselected South African population, which requires further study. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
