Outcomes of stroke events during transcatheter aortic valve implantation
CONCLUSIONS: Among Medicare beneficiaries undergoing TAVI, procedure-related ischaemic stroke was associated with worse outcomes, increased Medicare expenditures, and less time spent at home. Procedure-related ischaemic stroke during TAVI remains a critically important and potentially preventable source of patient mortality, morbidity and healthcare utilisation.PMID:35135749 | DOI:10.4244/EIJ-D-21-00951

Factors Associated With Length of Hospitalization in Patients Admitted With Transient Ischemic Attack in United States Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Approximately 75% of patients admitted with transient ischemic attack stay in the hospital for ≥2 days, with the most important determinants being pre-existing medical comorbidities. Longer duration of hospital stay is associated with 2- to 5-fold greater hospitalization charges.

Time-series Analysis of Heat Waves and Emergency Department Visits in Atlanta, 1993 to 2012
Conclusions: Heat waves can confer additional risks of ED visits beyond those of daily air temperature, even in a region with high air-conditioning prevalence. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP44 Received: 29 February 2016 Revised: 13 October 2016 Accepted: 24 October 2016 Published: 31 May 2017 Address correspondence to H.H. Abstract 072: Impact of Chronic Diabetes on Periprocedural Outcomes Among Patient With Atrial Fibrillation and Flutter Who Underwent Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation Therapy (RFA). Report From the NIS 2014. Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: RFA has a similar procedural safety in diabetics when compared to non-diabetic patients. It remains a safe procedure in diabetics with drug-refractory atrial fibrillation and flutter. Renal failure, CHF, type of Insurance, hospital location and teaching status are predictors of complications after RFA.

Impact of Complications on Resource Utilization during 90-day CABG Bundle for Medicare Beneficiaries
ConclusionsMedicare beneficiaries that experience adverse events during their index CABG hospitalization will significantly impact that hospital’s financial risk. The challenge under the voluntary CABG bundled payment program will be to monitor and reduce adverse events and managing the services consumed by Medicare beneficiaries experiencing adverse events delivered at all the venues of care.

Cause-Specific Risk of Hospital Admission Related to Extreme Heat in Older Adults
ImportanceHeat exposure is known to have a complex set of physiological effects on multiple organ systems, but current understanding of the health effects is mostly based on studies investigating a small number of prespecified health outcomes such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.ObjectivesTo identify possible causes of hospital admissions during extreme heat events and to estimate their risks using historical data.Design, Setting, and PopulationMatched analysis of time series data describing daily hospital admissions of Medicare enrollees (23.7 million fee-for-service beneficiaries [aged ≥65 years] per year; 8...

Incidence And Risk Factors For 30-Day Readmissions After Hip Fracture Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall rate of readmission following hip fracture surgery was moderate. Surgeons should consider discharge optimization in the at risk cohorts identified here, particularly patients with multiple medical comorbidities or an elevated ASA class, and should focus on wound complications and fall risks in order to minimize readmissions. Further, quality-reporting metrics should account for the risk factors identified here, in order to prevent penalties against surgeons who take on complex patients. Characteristics of Elderly Patients Initiating Sitagliptin or Non-DPP-4-Inhibitor Oral Antihyperglycemic Agents: Analysis of a Cross-Sectional US Claims Database
ConclusionPatients  ≥ 65 years with T2DM initiating sitagliptin tend to be older and have more comorbidities than those prescribed other classes of OAHA. Appropriate adjustment is required to minimize the impact of potential confounding and channeling bias in any comparative analyses including users of sitaglipti n.FundingMerck& Co., Inc., Kenilworth, NJ, USA.
