Pilot Study Demonstrating the Value of Interdisciplinary Education on the Integration of Radiation Therapy in Lung Cancer Management
This study aimed to understand baseline knowledge of basic principles of radiation therapy for lung cancer among medical oncology, thoracic surgery, and pulmonology trainees and practicing physicians and also assess whether a didactic lecture will improve objective knowledge and perceived comfort level in making appropriate referrals to radiation oncology (RO). Radiation oncologists at 8 academic institutions offered a presentation covering indications, logistics, efficacy, and toxicity of thoracic radiation. Participants completed a survey to assess their prior exposures to RO and perceived value of the lecture, and objec...

Hang Doctor: A Smartphone App to Learn and Improve Knowledge of TNM Classification in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)
Cancer staging plays an important role for treatment management, seems to be the best prognostic indicator of overall survival, and is useful for the evaluation of treatment response. The most common staging system is the TNM Classification by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). It is an anatomically based system that records the primary (T) and regional nodal (N) extent of the tumour and the absence or presence of metastases (M). Due to the impact of staging on further management of lung cancer it is of upmost importance to know and be able to apply the classification. The main objective of developing the H...

Lung Cancer Screening Knowledge Among Internal Medicine Residents in a University Program
AbstractLung cancer remains the main cause of cancer-related death. Even though several societies recommend that certain populations may benefit from lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), its nationwide adoption has been slow. Practices in primary care are closely linked to residency training. Recognizing gaps in knowledge during training may translate into increased utilization of life-saving measures. Sixty internal medicine residents training at a university-based program were presented with an anonymous online-based survey designed to measure their knowledge about lung cancer screening. In the...

Expert Consensus on Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19 Infection in Patients with Lung Cancer
Zhongguo Fei Ai Za Zhi. 2023 Mar 20;26(3):165-176. doi: 10.3779/j.issn.1009-3419.2023.102.12.ABSTRACTCorona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection has become a major public health issue affecting human health. The main goal of epidemic prevention and control at the current stage in China is to "protect people's health and prevent severe cases". Patients with lung cancer who receive antitumor therapy have low immunity, and the risk of severe illness and death once infected is much higher than healthy people, so they are vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. At present, less attention has been paid to the prevention and treatme...

How Does Health Education Given to Lung Cancer Patients Before Thoracotomy Affect Pain, Anxiety, and Respiratory Functions?
In this study, it was aimed to determine how the postoperative pain level, state-trait anxiety level, and respiratory function were affected by the health education given through a patient education booklet to patients with lung cancer, in comparison with control group, before pulmonary resection through thoracotomy. The 60 patients (n = 60) having pulmonary resection indication because of lung cancer were recruited in the present study. The patients were separated as control (n = 30) and experimental groups (n = 30). The patient education was applied to patients in the experimental groups via the education boo...

Development and Evaluation of Patient Education Materials for Elderly Lung Cancer Patients
This study developed and evaluated a patient education pamphlet on lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) designed specifically for an elderly population. The SBRT pamphlet was developed using a participatory design involving a convenience sample of patients. This prospective study assessed patient’s opinions of pamphlet effectiveness through self-report questionnaires. The pamphlet was deemed “effective” if patients rated 16/18 evaluation statements as “strongly agree” or “agree.” Demographic data and health literacy (Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine short-form (REALM-SF)) were also assessed....

Effects of a Web-based Health Education Program on Quality of Life and Symptom Distress of Initially Diagnosed Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial
This study used a randomized, pre- and post-repeated measures design. A total of 55 participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 27) and a control group (n = 28). The experimental group participated in a web-based health education program, and the control group received usual care. Patients were assessed at 4 time points: baseline assessment (T0), and then 1, 2, and 3 months (T1, T2, and T3) after participating in the web-based health education pro gram or receiving usual care. Patients in the experimental group had significantly greater global quality of life and emotional function, and significa...

The Effect on Nausea and Vomiting of Structured Education Given to Male Lung Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect on nausea and vomiting of structured education given to male lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. This quasi-experimental research study had pre- and post-tests control groups. The estimated sample size was at least 20 subjects per group. Data were collected in the chest diseases clinic and outpatient chemotherapy unit of a university hospital in Turkey. An education booklet and structured education were given 30  mins for each patient before chemotherapy. In post-test 1, nausea severity was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control ...

Effectiveness of a Patient Education Class to Enhance Knowledge about Lung Cancer Screening: a Quality Improvement Evaluation
AbstractBest practices to facilitate high-quality shared decision-making for lung cancer screening (LCS) are not well established. In our LCS program, patients are first referred to attend a free group education class on LCS, taught by designated clinician specialists, before a personal shared decision-making visit is scheduled. We conducted  an evaluation on  the effectiveness of this class to enhance patient knowledge and shared decision-making about LCS. For quality improvement purposes, participants were asked to complete one-page surveys immediately before and after class to assess knowledge and decision-making cap...

Training and Dissemination of Lung Cancer Education Curriculum Among Community Health Advisors in the Deep South: a Program Evaluation
This study seeks to evaluate the results of the Alabama Lung Cancer Awareness, Screening, and Education (ALCASE) training on CHAs, program evaluation, and lessons learned. A total of 202 participants were eligible and enrolled for CHA training. One hundred thirty CHAs were included for the final analyses. Descriptive statistics were computed; differences in pre-test and post-test scores were compared across demographic characteristics of the participants using pairedt-test/one-way ANOVA. Of the 130 CHAs, 46% were 65  years or older; 98% were African Americans, and 87% were female; 17% of participants were cancer survivors...

Measuring the Effects of Education in Detecting Lung Cancer on Chest Radiographs: Utilization of a New Assessment Tool
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of group and individualized educational lectures to accurately interpret chest radiographs of lung cancer patients and to introduce a new educational tool in evaluating skills for reading chest radiographs. Utilizing “hotspot” technology will be instrumental in measuring the effect of education in interpreting chest radiographs. There were 48 participants in the study. Chest radiographs of 100 lung cancer patients and 11 healthy patients taken at various time points were used for evaluation. Using “hotspot ” technology, lesions on each radiograph were outlined. Values ...
