Quantifying the potential effects of air pollution reduction on population health and health expenditure in Taiwan
Environ Pollut. 2023 Aug 17:122405. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122405. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAir pollution, particularly ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution, poses a significant risk to public health, underscoring the importance of comprehending the long-term impact on health burden and expenditure at national and subnational levels. Therefore, this study aims to quantify the disease burden and healthcare expenditure associated with PM2.5 exposure in Taiwan and assess the potential benefits of reducing pollution levels. Using a comparative risk assessment framework that integrates an auto-aggressive i...

Association between ambient air particulate matter and human health impacts in northern Thailand
This study analyzed the relationship between exposure to ambient concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 by using data from the Pollution Control Department of Thailand and the burden of disease due to an increase in the ambient particulate matter concentrations in northern Thailand. This study was conducted using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology considering the human health damage impact category in the ReCiPe 2016 method. The results revealed that the annual average years of life lived with disability from ambient PM2.5 in northern Thailand is about 41,372 years, while from PM10 it is about 59,064 years per 100,000 populat...

COPD and biologic treatment: state of the art
Curr Opin Allergy Clin Immunol. 2023 Jun 21. doi: 10.1097/ACI.0000000000000920. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, heterogeneous disease associated with abnormal inflammatory response of the lung to noxious particles and gases. The progression of disease leads to respiratory failure, disability and premature death. Although recent progress in reducing the global burden of many chronic disease, such as heart disease and cancer, mortality and morbidity due to COPD continue to increase despite of cigarette smoking worldwide policy. Additionally, diagnosti...

Modifiable risk-attributable and age-related burden of lung cancer in China, 1990-2019
CONCLUSIONS: The modifiable risk-attributable lung cancer burden remains high in China. Effective tobacco control is the critical step toward addressing the lung cancer burden. Adult population growth was the foremost driver of transition in the age-related lung cancer burden.PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: We estimate the lung cancer burden attributable to modifiable and nonmodifiable contributors and the effect of risk factor reduction for lung cancer on the life expectancy in China. The findings suggest that the majority of lung cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life years were attributable to behavioral risk clusters, and ...

Indirect Costs Due to Lung Cancer-Related Premature Mortality in Four European Countries
CONCLUSION: The results from this study illustrate a decreasing trend in productivity costs of premature mortality due to lung cancer, as illustrated by the decreasing PVFLP between 2010 and 2019. This trend could be driven by a shift in the distribution of deaths towards older age groups due to advancements in the preventative and treatment landscape. These results provide an economic measure of the lung cancer burden which may assist decision-makers in allocating scarce resources amongst competing priorities in the included countries.PMID:37195488 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-023-02509-x

Global burden of tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer attributable to occupational carcinogens in 204 countries and territories, from 1990 to 2019: results from the global burden of disease study 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Occupational exposure remains an important risk factor for TBL cancer. The burden of TBL cancer attributable to occupational carcinogens showed obvious heterogeneity which decreased in higher SDI but increased in lower SDI regions. The burden of males was significantly higher than females, but the females showed an increasing trend. Occupational exposure to asbestos was the main causes of the burden. Therefore, effective prevention and control measures tailored to local conditions are necessary.PMID:37155297 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2206672

Effects of Exercise Training in Patients with Lung Cancer during Chemotherapy Treatment
CONCLUSION: This study concluded that pulmonary rehabilitation along with aerobic training can be more effective than pulmonary rehabilitation alone for patients with lung cancer during chemotherapy treatment.PMID:37102045 | PMC:PMC10125234 | DOI:10.21315/mjms2023.30.2.13

Global Trends in Occupational Lung Disease
This study reviews recent estimates of the burden of the most important occupational lung diseases using data published by United Nations specialized agencies as well as the Global Burden of Disease studies. We focus on occupational chronic respiratory disease of which chronic obstructive lung disease and asthma are the most significant. Among occupational cancers, lung cancer is the most common, and is associated with more than 10 important workplace carcinogens. Classic occupational interstitial lung diseases such as asbestosis, silicosis, and coal workers' pneumoconiosis still comprise a substantial burden of disease in...

Burden of smoking on disease-specific mortality, DALYs, costs: the case of a high-income European country
CONCLUSIONS: We provide an estimate of the burden of smoking on disease-specific mortality, DALYs, medical costs and productivity losses in Switzerland that could be prevented through evidence-based tobacco prevention and control policies as well as regular monitoring of tobacco consumption.PMID:37060054 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-023-15535-9

Efficacy and safety of tofacitinib in Chinese patients with active psoriatic arthritis: a phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
CONCLUSION: In Chinese patients with PsA, tofacitinib efficacy was greater than placebo (primary and secondary endpoints). Tofacitinib was well tolerated; safety outcomes were consistent with the established safety profile in PsA and other indications.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03486457.PMID:36720560 | DOI:10.1136/rmdopen-2022-002559

Anti-Hu Antibodies in Patients With Neurologic Side Effects of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors
DISCUSSION: The presence of Hu-Ab identifies a subgroup of n-irAEs that consistently reproduce the phenotypes of Hu-Ab-related PNS, supporting the hypothesis of ICI triggering or unmasking PNS. As these patients show high disability and mortality, further studies are required to investigate the underlying immunopathogenic mechanisms and to improve the outcome of Hu-Ab n-irAEs.PMID:36446613 | DOI:10.1212/NXI.0000000000200058
